I've sort of noticed the same thing. My SL-R seemed to get pretty ashy looking at the edges about halfway through every day, regardless of temp/conditions (using Hertel Hot Sauce), and I thought it seemed like the base wasn't holding wax well. My solution was basically just to stop worrying about it - I wax every 2 times out, so I know I'm not neglecting the base. Over time it's gotten slightly better, and an experimental waxing with a Toko Molybdenum wax seemed to help the ashy appearance, but it didn't seem to glide quite as well. I wonder if NS's black bases just appear drier than they are. I just picked up a new Premier, and it looked dry as shit off the shelf (which I'm sure it was to an extent). I waxed with Hertel, and then 2nd application of Bluebird. I'm interested to see how that combo holds up. I'll find out tomorrow.
