yeah man to start between 400 and 500 would be nice. If you buy used you could save around $200. But choosing what board/bindings is completely dependent on your specifics i.e. weight, height, riding preferences etc. Burton of course has great stuff but that would put you up there in price. Lamar makes decent hardware and most of it is dirt cheap so I would check them out! Or if you happened to be looking for an '08 rome cheaptrick I could help you out. haha

Just because you are planning on learning snowboarding doesn't mean you'll break your wrist. If that's the mindset you are going into learning a sport that requires a lot of practice and patience...good luck. You're gonna be sore, you're gonna get tired and maybe frustrated. Just a heads up.

Sure, wrist injuries may be "common" but they are also easily preventable. As for gear costs, I just bought a new '09 Forum board and pretty solid pair of new '09 Ride bindings for $200 after tax and shipping. That is unusually cheap for new gear, but if you buy stuff on sale you can find a decent setup at a reasonable price. And there's always craigslist.

You could break your wrist stepping wrong getting out of your car or off a curb.
Unless you make a living playing guitar or something, dont let it stop you.

Wrist guards if you are afraid of hurting your wrist. I've been riding for 14+ years now and no wrist guards(knock on wood), and only once did I get close to hurting my wrists.

for board type are you very ambidextrous? If so then you may want a twin board possibly. If not a directional board would be fine.

Death Metal, I don't know what mountain you're near, but look around. I teach at Wildcat in N.H. and you can get 4 lessons, 4 rentals and 4 lift tickets for just over $200 bucks. Then on top of that, once you complete that, you get a season's pass. I know a lot of places in New England have similar deals for "never evers". Look before you leap amigo.
