Fogg, the rub-on waxes aren't worth their weight in used toilet paper. Stick with hot waxing. Regardless of extruded or sintered base, if you're riding on crud you'll need to wax more often. If you don't, you'll find performance suffering a bit, but you won't just fall over. If you're sufficiently new, you won't be able to tell the difference.
Waxing a board is incredibly easy. Just need to have the time. I wax my own board, and I do it every 3rd or 4th session -- but we had pretty good snow.
Coffee is your friend. Everyone else is an acquaintance.
