Im probably going to be picking up a lib tech skunk ape soon. This will be my first new board in about 7 years. Im a bigger guy, about 6'' 215lbs and have a size 12 boot. I want a board that will be good for pretty much everything on the mountain, but most of all i want a board that is a lot of FUN. I mainly want a poppy board that I can shred groomers, hit the back country, and ride the park. The guys at the shop recommended that I ride the 161 if i want a funner board, but i do not want to sacrifice ridebility and stability when im shredding the groomers and floating the powder. Right now im debating between the 161 and the 165, but i wanted to get some input from here first before i make my final decision. What sizes/styles of riding are people using for these boards?

No i dont think i could demo either size. Im leaning towards the 161 just because i want a really fun board, and your post just confirmed that a little more. It also seems like the 161 would be a little more versatile? Thanks for the input!

I'd take the 161. I'm 6'3" and fluctuate between 180 and 200lbs. Hell, the 161 is longer than I would really want honestly. I'd rather have a 159 or even a 157. The only way I want the 165 is if I'm using it as a pow/backcountry stick. And even then, I think the 161 would work just fine.

another vote for 161 if you haven't already decided.
I'm 6'4'' 210 and ride the 161.5 TRice for very similar riding that you mentioned...pretty similar board but the Ape is a little wider. The rocker between your feet really helps witht he float in the deep powder and makes it much easier to ride a smaller board without sinking in the deep stuff. I rode it in tits deep poweder opening day this year and had no problem staying on top. A bigger board would float better, but 161 will work great for everything. If you really want something to float like crazy, you can alway pick up a pow specific deck. |
