Most tech really does something, what you're experiencing is the fact that the rider is always > the board.
New gear will make certain things easier or just more fun, but you can ride anything anywhere as long as your skill lets you.
Let me put it this way, I can jib an all mountain board, and ride powder on a jib board, but jibbing is more fun on a jib board and speed and powder are more fun on an all mountain board. Same goes for tech, I can have fun blasting pow stashes on a 5150, but its more fun on something say like the Flow Drifter with a combo camber tech, carbon, and an engineered flex pattern.
Tech doesnt make or break the act of snowboarding, it enhances it.
