It's a bit like say size 13 shoes suck. They might be a pain for someone with a size 8 foot, but a size 8 shoe on a size 13 foot would be ten time worse. Narrow boards on big feet don't work. That statement is typically made by someone with an agenda. Many manufacturers unable to make wider boards have made such a claim.
This sounds pretty simple to me. If I ride a wide deck with my size 9's it'll probably suck getting edge to edge. If someone has size 14's and rides a normal board it'll probably suck too.
I have size 11s. I have a regular and a semi wide board, difference is 0.5cm at the waist.
It is definitely slower edge to edge but its a very small difference. The width also gives a little extra float in pow.
Wide boards suck if you don't need one. Demoed a wide one time because they didn't have a regular, and with a size 10 boot, yeah, I noticed the difference.
My size 12.5s think that my wide board is just fine. I'm riding a 26.7 waist so it's pretty wide, but edge to edge speed is pretty good I think. I know from trying a few friends boards that when on a normal width I kept catching my toes and that sucked ass.
