Hello and great forum! I'm a longtime skier who has started boarding bowering a buddies board. I ended up buying boots size 10 but want to pick up a board. I'm 6 foot, 180 lbs wanted to ask if the newer board are really necessary at this stage or am I better off with say a Sims Absolute new off EBay for 150 bucks. Local shop is pushing a ride Antic or Burton Clash but wanted some opinions. Again great forum and thanks in advance

I've taken up and then abandoned enough pursuits over the years to have learned not to spend a bunch of dough until I'm sure I'm going to stick with something. YMMV. Keep in mind that the end of season sales start soon, at which time you might be able to get a sweet deal on some new equipment (I did that my first year). Meanwhile, depending on how often you plan to go, you might rent a couple of times or just buy a beater board locally (craigslist?). I can almost guarantee that whatever board you buy, new or used, you'll want to replace it in a year. It's not a quality issue, it's just that when you know more about what you want, you'll want something else. Unless you're incredibly lucky or very very smart.

I recently just went from ski to snowboard.

Its a total different feeling, i would suggest a forward stance with your binding since you are used to facing down the mountain and it will be easier for you to learn and get the confidence. Then transition into duck if you are not doing one direction. Falling is a lot worse and more painful in snowboarding since it harder to fall the way you want too. So just keep it going, took me a whole day to finally learn how to link turns and not eat it every 5 feet lol.

Im also 6'6 220 and my boot size is 15 lol, so if i know one thing its that im more built for ski but as a Marine i never accept defeat haha

How old are you?

I bought the cheapest board I could find for my style (free-ride). It was a new Ride Control for $120 if I remember well. Invest in body protection.
I got crash pads shorts, helmet and protective gloves, you will fall, so why suffer? Pick your days wisely.. avoid hard pack and ice like pest, start later in the day. Riding is a bit like riding a bicycle...you need a little speed to keep your balance in a turn. Learn how to fall and roll and you won't get hurt.

Hopefully I don't get beat up for asking this as it seems controversial. I was looking at a stomp pad for extra grip when getting off the lift. Have been fine so far but seems like the extra grip would be nice as my foot slipped a few times but let the record show I never dumped it.
