Board help needed... all-mountain, beginner/intermediate
Weight: 79kg (174lb)
Height: 178cm (5'10)
Boot size: 12 US
Riding style: Groomers, off piste, not a lot of park yet but I'd like to learn
Age: 30 (BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!)
Alright, so I'm keen for some help, looking at buying my first board (and bindings). I started snowboarding last year, and now I'm pretty much like 'why didn't I discover this sooner?!?!'. So far I've just had rental boards. Down here in NZ it's often pretty hard-packed and can get icy and slushy at times, but I'm planning to save up hard so I can travel a lot - just got back from Sun Peaks, BC, where it was pretty awesome for someone used to tiny NZ resorts!
I'm comfortable on blue runs (groomed or otherwise), and am starting to tackle some black runs as well. I've recently discovered the joys of riding off piste and through the trees (FUN!). The things I'd like to develop next are getting more adventurous off-piste, tackling more black runs, learning to ride switch, and getting into some basic jumps and rails.
Basically, I'm looking for a decent all-mountain board, and not fussy on brand, just want to get a good board that'll help me improve my skills. Have sort of narrowed it down to the following based on a bit of research and some other posts around here:
Rome Agent Rocker
Any thoughts? I don't want something too forgiving as I think it's important to learn good technique, equally I don't want something that is liable to catch edges too easily.
edit: Also wanted to ask... is a rocker board a decent choice at this stage or am I better to stick with traditional camber for a bit longer, which is what the rentals have been?
hell no get a rocker board they are much more fun.
My vote goes with the Ride Machete in 155 if you want to do more park or a 158 if you want it for more all around. It will definitely take you as far as you want to go skill wise.
im 5'10 165 lbs and ride a similar 157 for everything except jibbing.
Morph, Burton guarantees not to catch any edges on the Bullet. That combined with the "Cruise control", this is one of the best boards to master your skills. It has the EZ-V rocker deck, 160Wide. It's yours for $160 plus shipping, new in plastic...
