From what it looks like there were two different base options and you got the other one and quite possibly they just didn't put the tear drop on that base.. I will try and see if I can come up with anything(edit that is the 08/09 model)the tear drop came out in 09/10, hope this helps..

Construction seems fine. And yes metal edges. heavy scuffing on tip of the top sheet (this is a used board)
I get that bases are different so they dont waste any base material, but i thought the edges should be the same. |

I suspect the one with the "thingy" to be pre-production model White Transitions: 2008/2009 Burton X8 Looks Promising(blog entry date is pre-release)
None of the boards featured here shows the "thingy". |

I had a 157 same model year, 2009. I don't recall the medallion/tear-drop thing on the base of mine.
Evo's stock photo doesn't include the teardrop: http://www.evo.com/imgp/750/18039.Image.1.jpg moosejaw still has some in-stock, also doesn't show the teardrop: Burton X8 Snowboard 155 - Men's - Free Shipping on Burton orders over $49 at Moosejaw

OP, why dont you email burton....include the serial number, they should be able to tell you if its a rip off or not, plus a few other bits of info, like manufacture date & location etc
