Dumb Question from a n00b board owner - Snowboarding Forum

Just bought my first deck off the Internet (always rented). Can't wait to hit the slopes thus winter!!!

Are you supposed to wax/service a new board before you take it on the mountain, or do they come off the rack ready to ride?

If it's new, you can ride it. It'll have a storage coat of wax on it.

I'd still rewax it though.

as far as edges go, they are as sharp as they are ever going to be. you can de-tune the tip (dull them) (you don't need to do this) but otherwise in that regard they are perfectly ready. The wax is ok too, but they use factory wax which is pretty much only meant to be used to keep the board from drying out. If you like, you can clean and re-wax the board before your first time out, but you can also go once on the factory was job.

Since this is your first board I'd recommend cleaning it off and waxing it yourself before you ride it. I mean, you have plenty of time to do it assuming you live in the Western Hemisphere.

Anothe stupid question: How do I wax the board myself?

How do i go about "cleaning it" first? Do i just wipe it off, or do i need to somehow remove the remaining wax from the previous coat?

As for applying wax, do I just buy some snowboard wax (brand recommendations?) and then rub it all over the bottom?

How thick? How much should I use?

Approximately how often should I re-apply?

Does anyone have any good tutorials (YouTube?) that they could recommend that would show me how to do it CORRECTLY myself?

This is Snowolf's three part waxing video, which is very descriptive and accurate.
In response to your questions:
1 to clean it (remove all wax from the base), use a special snowboard or ski base wax remover, or a gentle citrus house cleaner
2 Go to your local store and ask for what types of wax they have. I don't really care about brands, i generally buy what's on sale
3 You can get rub on wax, but it wears off in about 2 runs. Go for melt on wax, it lasts a tonne longer ( this is the normal kind)
4 ( watch the videos for this one)
5 This is all up to personal preference, conditions (snow-wise) and amount of time boarding. When you start to see the edges of your board turning white (drying out) then you should re apply. I do this maybe once ever two days out. (7+ hours)

Not to sound like a jerk, but you have to think that most "noob questions" will have been answered 100 times over on pretty much any forum you go on. This is where stickies come in. They're generally at the start of each forum section and cover stuff that's frequently brought up.

They really are a wealth of information. Trouble with starting a new post is you don't know who'd replying. The guys that have put the effort into contributing to the stickies might not post to your specific thread, so you'll have missed that info. The guys responding might give you bad information that goes unchecked.

In other words... Stickies are your friend!

No worries, you're just more likely to find better info in there for the usual topics. That said I don't think anybody's crazy anal in here about rehashing questions. I've been on car and sportbike forums since before the internets was popular and the number of times we got the question "what oil is the best for my car?" used to drive us nuts!

The answer is wet oil by the way... Wet oil.
