Learn to wax it yourself, it will save you money and time. It really depends on how much you ride, but I would say to wax it after about two or three times out. As for sharpening the edges, that's also easy to do on your own. It really depends what style you ride though. If you ride a lot of icy conditions, you need to stay sharp compared to powder or park riding. You can run your fingernail on the edge of the board to tell if it needs sharpening. If it's sharp enough, it will scratch your fingernail a bit.

Tuning depends on what you ride most.
In Icy conditions, you'll have to wax and sharpen more often. When its icy I usually have to wax every other outing. Edges get sharpened every 10th outing. When its soft snow you can go a whole season without a sharpening. just some wax once in a while. |

i wax before every ride, i love going fast. edges, when they feel like they need sharpening. if i only ride pow, i'll skip a wax. i try to keep my edges as clean as possible but when your in the alpine, it can be quite rocky. so i take my board in at the end of the season to get the base and edges professionally done so its fresh for opening day

Since I have all my own tools, I wax before almost every trip. But the rule, when I used to work at a shop, was something like every 3-5 days of riding or 3 months sitting idle. I keep my edges very sharp and I touch them up as needed with diamond stones.
