for best performance, every 2-3 days is what I do. You can go a little longer, if necessary, but keep an eye on it so the base doesn't dry out (turns white-ish).
If you keep it on a good, consistent waxing schedule, the base gets faster and faster throughout the season.
don't forget the edges, either. Blunted/burred edges will slightly slow you down on every turn and just make turning and hold on steeps sketchy, in general. Just a regular whetstone (knife sharpening stone) will gets the basic burs off, but you're gonna need an edge tool, eventually
