At the end of this month the travel starts. From Sweden to Salt Lake City with our main purpose is to ride as much powder as we can in 8 days.
I am not really sure what to expect: 3 feet of pure untouched champagne powder or 4 inches of thick snow with lots of tracks.
But the question is "Do I have the proper gear?".
Since we seldom have dumps of snow back home I havn't tried my latest setup in deep snow.
My weight is 140 lbs and I am 5'7" tall.
- Nitro Team Gullwing, 157 with Burton Cartel bindings. My all mountain setup. Purchased last year.
- Salomon Drift Rocker, 148 with Salomon Rhythm. My park setup. Purchased this year.
My guess is I have to set my stance back one step or two, and perhaps lean back a bit.
But stiff on the flex scale. I understand what they say, but one of my previous board was a Custom X and I didn't like how stiff it was. And this one is even more.
maybe not the best voice on the subject, but I've ridden a lot of deep west coast powder and prefer a much stiffer board in those conditions. Stiff boards tend to power through if/when your nose get super buried...especially if the snow is turns out heavy.
i would think the nitro team gullwing with its hybrid rocker would be adequate without a set back up until like 6 - 8 inches, then set back for anything more, with a full set back for anything over like 1.5 feet.
Last year in march in park city i rode 2 - 3 feet of pow on a flat camber board with my bindings all the way set back and it was not as good as my bros rockered board but it was still a blast, even with bronchitis.
Set back helps but riding real deep snow on a real pow board is just a different game. If you are renting at the mountain my guess they will only have a fish. If you are going to dig around there are lots of options in the market.
The charlie rides more like a freeride board with extra float. The flat profile makes it a little slow to turn but is super stable in all conditions. My pow board is a lib snowmullet and it turns you into a hero in the deep snow, yet is soft and jibby when you are riding around. I would love to try a lib birdman, neversummer summit, smokin pinner. Taper and rocker does work.
Personally I think the Powder Snake is better than the Sickstick. Same shape, but a more traditional core and flex profile. Just more oomph in a slash or popping off pillows.
Your 157 Nitro is going to be more than fine for 140lbs. As long as you've got a decent grade to the mountain you're at even if it dumps 4 feet that board is enough. Keep some speed and you'll plain just fine.
Not harder to turn but maybe "slower to react" compaired to boards with rocker between the inserts. Riding a 165 snowmullet and a 164 slasher the same day I can tell you that the mullet pivots from the middle and the slasher turns from the tail. This true on firm snow and even more so in the pow.
Thanks for the all the input on my Nitro 157. Great to know that it will work - now it's up to me to handle it. Perhaps play around with setback if we get plenty of snow.
Will my park setup (Salomon Drift Rocker 148) sink like a stone? It's lighter and softer - enough to keep nose up?
The reason I bringing this board is because I really love this board. At our small but fun local "hill" with a dream park this is where I have been this year and only shredding with this board - it's so fun to ride.
Thanks! I have sometimes thought that I had to get a powder board - for the sole purpose of this trip, which isn't that cost effective. Perhaps if it comes tons of snow I'll rent a pure powder board in order to feel the difference and hopefully the fun of it.
Yeah, like most have already said, your so small that your 157 gullwing should work fine. Set it all the way back for the deep pow and ride smart. You shouldnt waste money and buy a deep powder board for a few days, unless your super rich, your gullwing will kick ass.
If we are going to Snowbasin is it best to look for rental there or in SLC?
Would I be expecting Burton Fish as only option or do they usually have more selection?
