Steamboat in december?

Hey, I am thinking about going to steamboat from dec. 14-19. I was wondering how good the snow would be going that early?

Eh it depends they usually open right after Thanksjibbing so that means by X mas they want the full mountain open. When I lived there 2 seasons ago it was pretty rough at that time not a lot open.

It all depends in the season, Colorado had a late start last season. But through the month of December they got so much snow that it was crazy, I think somewhere around 100 inches for some resorts.

Lately i decided to not risk my money and only travel later on in the season just to be safe. But if you have to make a decision now, I would always keep my options option and be willing to drive a little extra for better conditions.

I would also make reservations for different hotels in different resorts, that way comes the day you can choose which one has the best conditions. Some of these hotels have very flexible cancellation policies.

It can be hit or miss that time of year. Steamboat seems to get it's own weather patterns going too. I think it got first dibs before Aspen/Snowmass started cranking. Last season it didn't start snowing till mid-december and then it didn't stop all season. Steamboat had a record snowfall year last season.

The way to check the weather in Steamboat is to see if the jet stream coming from Seattle is going through Wyoming or Dipping into SLC. Thats going to be the determining factor on snow.
