sizing question on rome 390's

I have a pair of these and am pretty happy with them. I want to order a pair for my son so he can get rid of his cheapies that gave him all sorts of problems last year. He wears a size 8.5 in mens and is growing like a weed! If I get the L/XL would that be a problem. I'm sure by next winter he'll be in size 9 or greater. Rome says L/Xl is for size 9 and up and the s/m is for up to size 9. I suppose I could always put my L/xl bindings on his board to see, but that's kind of a hassle
