New Boot Trouble!

Hi there,

I've recently taken up snowboarding and thought it was time to get some boots of my own (as the hire shop ones are real scruffy/battered!) and I'm off on Holiday in a months time..

With me being new to the sport I didn't want to over-spend on my first pair, but did a bit of research on the boot I did buy and took the time to measure my foot correctly as I understand this is probably the most important piece of equipment needed.

Now I bought a pair of Salomon Pearl boots in a UK5 MP 23.5 (this is my foot size and also the sizes of the various boots I have worn in my lessons).
I received the boots yesterday and they are brand new, but as soon as I put them on I feel pressure on the front of my toes.

I did read up and it suggests the boot should be tight and it could take some riding to wear them in, but is this a normal thing? I'm aware I don't want them loose, I can just about move my toes, there is slight pressure on the top of my toes too, the heel fits in snug and doesn't lift, should I be feeling this?

I'm worried about using them to my lessons and damaging them so I can't send them back and will de-value them if I want to sell on if they're not right for me?

I know it's difficult to buy online but I would have to travel by train over an hour to my nearest boot fitting shop, it's crazy! :(

Thanks for your help in advance :)

look and study this link

You can't really tell how a new boot fits by just wearing them around the house....so it is hard to tell how boots fit until you actually ride....and then its hard to tell how much they will pack out until you have spent 8-12 days riding. You will be lucky to have the first pair of boots work for you....many of us have gone through at least several pairs of boots before finding the right ones.

btw the rental/hired boots that you have worn...were likely already too packed out, were loose and ill fitting...so you really can't go by your prior experience/feel of the hired boots

Yup this, Wrath is so smart.

I bought new boots a week ago and they felt super small and tight. My left big toe was really pinched. I made sure my toe nails were super short and I wore them around the house for a few days. I also got them heat molded too which helped a bit. New boots usually feel really tight, but they do break-in. Just wear them while you do dishes and vacuuming etc, that's what I did. I also wore them while I waxed my boards. After a few days they will feel much better, mine did. Good luck.

PS: Socks matter!!! Do you have a good pair of snowboard socks? I recommend merino wool.

Actually, in this case I would suggest that your rental boots answer your question. As Wrath notes those boots have been well used and packed out already. If they fit decently well then it's reasonable to expect your new boots to pack out to somewhere close to the same size.

Overall it sounds to me like you have the right size boots, you just need to heat mold them and start riding!

Make sure your heel is firmly seated before you tighten the laces or whatever. It's really important to do this when boots are new so you create a good foot mold as you ride. One way: put boots on while seated, bang back of heel into ground, then tighten boots. A good fit should be comfy when you are standing in riding position, leaning in with weight on your shins. That'll pull your toes back a bit. If you have lots of room for toe wiggle you'll end up really hurting your toes and toenails.
