I wanted to know if anyone ever trimmed his/her boots to cut unnecessary material??

(Travis) ''Rice used to take a kitchen knife to his boots and bindings, cutting off unnecessary material''
Source: The design behind the Travis Rice Signature Model snow boots | SI.com

My Vans Aura are US 9.5 and I should not need a Wide board and Large bindings. However they have such huge soles and I think this is a design flaw.

As I'm getting older I mostly bomb hills and work a lot on my carving technique, I noticed some definite hanging on the heels especially.

I know that Burton boots have reduced imprints that helps on the hanging. But I love the confort and flexibility/response of my Auras and I have wide feet so it is a real pain in the butt trying to find a boot that would be has great as this one fits me.

I put my boots in my main bindings (Union Factory, fyi) and took a pencil to mark the extra material that needed to be cut. Then I took the exacto knife and cut the extra stuff. It was easier than I thought but leaves a raw finish.

I'm juggling between taking my orbital sander to finish the job or if you have another solution.

So I wanted to know if anyone has ever did that job on their boots?

Pictures are coming later..

If you're not real careful you're gonna end up with a boot full of water. You could eliminate drag by upping your angles. But really you should get fitted for boots with a reduced footprint. Or, better yet, buy a wide, softboot carving board. Or even better still: buy a full hardboot carving rig and never look back.

My guess is that when T Rice was hacking bindings and shit he had a mountain of free gear getting thrown at him and therefore could afford to do some experimenting. I pay for my gear and would rather sell something that didn't fit me right than try to rig it into a good fit.

Quote from the article....

"Rice used to take a kitchen knife to his boots and bindings, cutting off unnecessary material, often leading to him destroying his equipment"

I would not do this just for the same reason Fielding stated. I don't get free shit....

I would go try other boots! Burton ruler wide, Adidas tactical adv, or the energy boost one. DC Judge.

I have wide feet as well. It took me years by trial and error to find the 3 boots mentioned above. Adidas being my favorite.

All 3 have reduced foot print so you will be able to fit into a M binding.

Have you tried other boots with smaller foot prints?

Might be worth while to go to a store and try them on. They will heat mold it for you too.

When I first tried my Salomon dialogue wide's, I thought they were perfect. But I noticed I needed L Burton bindings. Then I tried DC same size As it fit really good too. Had to get rid of my L binding to get a M.

Thought i was set with DC as it was great, love the fit and the performance.

Then I just tried Adidas because I was bored. Ended up liking it better than DC judge.

TLDR - sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.

It is a possibility for next Fall. But the budget said to keep those that I have now for the end of the season.

I am looking at the Burton Imperials pretty seriously but no shop has them in stock with my size in my area at this time of the season.
