Default How to protect boot against the Snowboard Edge?

I remember that the rental boots have these small plastic plates over the lacing near the front of the boot. I thought it was just a boot design.

After taking my first pair of boots on the slopes I came home to realize that the snowboard edge already made a cut on the fabric/leather. It probably occurred when I rested the snowboard on that boot during the lifts.

What are those those plastic plates called? I think I need one on my boot to prevent further cuts.

Thanks for any help.
