Sole cushioning in boots.
So I finally got my New pair of sb bots in the mail and have had a chance to pull out my custom footbeds and put them in the new ones.
Something I noticed is that the footbeds are pretty hard in the arch and heel (ok) but between the ball of the footbed, the sole of the liner and then the boot, its no wonder I can feel the ground! I do not have any cushioning!
The stock Nike footbeds do have some foam cushioning but it is thin and squishy and would wear down quickly with the weight and movement of a rider.
Has anyone made any alterations to perhaps the space between the boot and the liner (sheets of plain foam cut to size?)
Not sure this is helpful, but I have some boots with zero cushioning in the forefoot and a pair with a well-padded forefoot. With a board+binding that's well-dampened, there is very little difference (I also have a setup, where icy Corduroy can rattle your teeth out).
Adding a helpful amount of extra padding will likely be tough (due to space), your best bet is probably a different footbed, maybe something like the Superfeet Berry.
Normally the footbed of the bindings should offer a major part of cushioning. Some more, some less. I wouldn't worry too much about the cushioning in your boots and try riding them the way they are now.
What kind of custom footbeds do you have? There are different ones for every day use (usually harder) and sports (softer, with a bit of cushioning). You could also check out Footprint Gamechangers. Very comfy footbeds that mold perfectly to your foot.
I have airbag and cantered bindings, they are the best I've had. I make sure i do the best for my knee.
My footbeds are ConForm'able Snow + FlashFit I believe, took awhile to fit and mould them exactly to my feet. Not a $250 pair but certainly the next step down. I go through Superfeet like no body's business, they just don't last and don't offer me the arch support I need.
Riding feels ok unless riding for a couple hours (not full go) or if I have to walk anywhere in my boots, it feels like bare feet and then my feet burn.
