Default Demo review: Burton Custom flying V (2014-15)

Ok so i got to demo a Custom flying V with Genesis binding today, and i must say it's a pretty good setup for people who like the surfy/floaty/mellow feeling for all mtn riding and pretty solid for beginners. Rode it for like 3hrs; rode the 158cm with L Genesis EST, i weight 170lbs. The size felt perfect for me.

There was a good amount of fresh snow (~17cm but way deeper in spots as it's been snowing on/off all week), plus a bit of soft pack and some slush in places. I rode the board with my 32 TM2 boots, which may be a little stiffer than people would normally ride with this board, but it was totally fine, he TM2s are very versatile. I took it on green, blue and black runs, from groomed to slightly chopped up to total fresh untouched snow.

First of all, i was really surprised with how floaty the board is. It floats really well; not exactly a pow board, but it has that effortless floaty feeling. Also, it had pretty good edge hold and turning on groomers was totally smooth... the conditions were good, but i guess the flying V would work like a bit of a really mellow magnetraction, so i think it wouldnt be bad on icy stuff.

Flex is pure mid flex. Not a noodle at all, not stiff. The whole setup was incredibly light too.

It's weaknesses were speed, stability and a little bit of pop. Obviously, the board i ride and immediately rode afterwards kind of highlight this; so not necessarily everyone will feel the same. Chop and bumpy stuff requires some slowing down because the board gets over powered. It's doable but you can't just point it down and rip through everything. It was really nice off natural hits where you don't know exactly what you're going to land on, due to it being really forgiving; so-so on park jumps and boxes (camber is better for this) but not bad at all.

I rode my go-to board (R/C/R Endeavor Live 159cm) immediately after, and the stability, pop, carveability and unforgiving nature were noticeable from the get-go. I felt i had to work a tiny little bit more for float but not much. The whole transition was such that I caught a baaaad edge on a toeside turn on my first run on the Live; but i felt the immediate need and assurance to go faster... so right there the Live reminded me it is an aggressive beast and not for chilling... brah.

All in all...the Custom is a good board for: beginner and intermediate all mountainers who ride a variety of conditions (especially pow), playful surfy mellow riding rider, someone who hit lots of not-so gnarly natural features and some park too. Would be a really solid first board.

Not for: fast, aggressive riders. Going big.

Would i trade my RCR beast for this flying V mellow ride? nope. No way I'd trade the stability, pop and energy of RCR for flying V. But i would definitely recommend it to people who like that; in fact, this should have been my first board. I would maybe have it as part of a quiver for chill days or riding pow with the Mrs., because the surfy feeling is pretty cool and the board just feels nice to ride.

About the Genesis... the review is short: total awesomeness. Superb bindings

The new model will have Autocant and the L were definitely smaller than my L Missions. Could it be i can center them with my sz 11 boots? I will check, and if they do... it's a heavy contender for my next bindings. Damn, i would probably buy an EST board just to run these bindings.

Cheers!
