There is no mystery to this; do what millions of skiers, snowboarders and outdoor recreationists around the world have figured out:

Nikwax

Quite simple really:

1) Wash garment in machine with Nikwax Wash or powdered detergent and line dry or tumble on low heat.

2) Re treat and restore waterproofing by washing garment in machine with the wash in Nikwax waterproofing.

Unless you are a total slob, there is no reason to need to wash your outerwear more than a couple of times in a season and at the begining of the season waterproof it. Spending $25 to take care of equipment that you have hundreds invested in seems logical to me.

This is my problem. There are no stores around here that carry that stuff and I am leaving this coming saturday for utah. I need to get this washed. All my local shop had was grangers spray on waterproofer. I need something to get the grime off and it is bad. I really don't want to wash clothes when I go out there.

Sportwash costs ~$5 and can be found in the hunting section of most Wal-Marts. It's a clear liquid and made for Gore-Tex, down, and other materials that you don't want to clog with typical laundry detergents.
