Default Are helmets nescessary?

are helmets nescessary? I guess it's just preference in a way. People usually tell me that they use their helmets only for parks. What do u think?

Also if i was to get a helmet, i'd would want one that was low to my head. Some helmets look like space helmets when you put them on and feel uncomfortable. Any suggestions?

They are not necessary but are a good idea. A head shot that would knock you out, might only leave you dazed. No helmet in the world is going to protect you if you hit a tree at 30mph or land on your head after a huge air. Still, they can reduce injuries. Several of which you might get in the park. I wear one all the time and mostly ride backcountry. You never know what is under the snow in the bc and a roll could run you right through rocks. So a helmet is a little extra insurance just in case.
Find one that fits you well and that you like. Helmets are way better for warmth than a hat. You'll be amazed. Also if you are into tree riding, a helmet will allow you to take it to the next level. Goggles and hats getting ripped off by close in tree branches don't happen. You can even use the helment to know branches out of your way. Very nice...

In addition, if your a speed demon, then helments are a good call. When you go down at speed, it can be, well, note-cute.

helmets are a really good idea... althought i don't always wear mine

just think of this... I was watching a big air comp. (everyone was wearing helmets) and I can remember the guys name but he slamed so hard that the helmet actual broke, not the strap the helmet itself, and came off his head completely knocking him out and giving him a serious concussion.. not that a concussion isn't something serious in the first place. now imagine if he wasn't wearing a helmet... can you say dead, in a coma.

this happened on nice snow... no rocks, trees, stumbs, or even ice

I think its a necessity 100%. Not in the respect that it will save u from harm...but boy without it you dont have a chance. When it comes to the mountains...I dont worry about hitting anything myself for Ive done that(when I was a skier I hit a tree at about 40+mph racing) but I more worry about others crashing into me and then hitting my head. When you do fall, sometimes and mid range speeds if u have the helmet that can actually help you if you tumble on your head as you try and correct yourself.

Bottom line. I wear a helmet when I snowboard and mountainbike because for me it is 100% necessary...

i made it my first few seasons with out a helmet and no problems, but all i did was go down groomers. two seasons ago i finally started venturing into park features and the back side of the mountain. didn't take too many spills on my back or shoulders where my head snapped against the ground for me to decide a helmet was 100% necessary. I have a R.E.D hifi that i like. Haven't tried any others.
