Default board flex

waddup boarders!

this weekend i was boarding and tried out two different boards. one was longer (153cm) and seemed to have more flex while the other was shorter (142cm) and felt stiffer. i felt the shorter, stiffer board had more control going down steeper runs. did the flex have something to do w/ it or the length of the board?

btw, i'm 5'7", 150lbs.

yah it felt better fast cause its stiff. and if you didn't already know, 142 is way too short for your weight, even if the www came in that size it would even be to short. are you asking for advice on a new board or just curious on what you experienced?

In general a longer, stiffer board is going to be more stable at high speed. Having said that though, a lot depends on the board make and model also. There is a lot of technical engineering put into boards so sometimes it`s comparing apples to oranges and length/stiffness is not the only factor.

i was basically just confirming that a stiff board holds better going down a steep slope... i'm fairly new at this and barely found out that boards have different flex. just starting to read into all the different types and styles, fun stuff!

and yea, 142 is too short for me, but that wasn't my board, i was just trying it out. good thing i did cuz, i now realize i need a much stiffer board.

but thanks for the help!

stiffer boards are used for downhill or freestyle or backcountry and sometimes jibbing depending on what kinda jibbing. the more flexible board which was a 153 was meant for the park for someone 6ft or more. it was the shortness that gave you the control. you should find a short flexible board from 148 to 152. any inbetween there will be perfect for your height/weight for the park and you will learn how to use it for everywhere.

Stiffer boards for freestyle or jibbing? Are you on crack? Also, height has nothing to do with board length...

stiff boards are faster as they have the strength (longitudinally) to cut through the snow, rather than bend and flex over it. ie. you need to travel a shorter distance to get from A to B (so to speak)

also on turns, (due to torsional stiffness) they can hold their edge higher at a more obtuse angle and so are less likely to wash out, creating a sideslip which causes a loss of speed and direction.

personally i love stiff boards, but that is coz i am an aggressive rider (aggressive not fast) and for jumps stiff planks often give lots of lovely pop on the ollie.

as for rails tho.... well i leave them for skateboarders so i couldn't give a monkey's uncle!
