It's easy and can be relatively easy to ruin a board. Proper temp on the iron and constant movement. You can reduce the risk by not dropping hot wax on your board. Those drops of wax can stay hot for quite a while. Rub the wax on, then use the iron to melt it. Rub plus Iron should take less than 2-3 minutes once you get the hang of it. And, you don't have to wait as long for it to cool, scrape, and buff.

I use an old iron. I use an instant read thermometer to set the temp of the base. Usually ends up somewhere around silk. I attached a thermocouple to the base of the iron and did some testing for temperature fluctuations. Was only +- 3 degrees.
