2013/14 Salomon Mans Board 165

Ill start with my stats;

6'2", 250 and been riding for 19 seasons. I mostly ride trees, powder and sidecountry when conditions are good otherwise I like carving on the groomers as a last resort. Very little Park and no Pipe.

I have ridden the Mans Board for 4 days now, 2 in Park City and 2 at my local mountain. Conditions have been mixed from packed powder to powder to Cascade cement.

I have been using some borrowed K2 CO2's as my Burton Diodes are on backorder. Using 2013/14 Salomon malamutes.

Impressions:

This board is a welcome return to camber for me. Last year I rode a 2012/13 T.Rice 164.5 which was my first rocker hybrid, prior to that always rode camber boards. I quickly learned that I do not like the teeter-totter feel of rocker in between my feet and will never own a board with that profile again.

The Mans board felt pretty much like coming home for christmas from the first run, comfortable and ready for a good time. It doesnt hold quite the edge of some freeride boards I have owned (burton t6, glissade big gun) in the past but is more than ample and if you work it will hang with the best of them other than dedicated carve/race boards. It is plenty quick edge to edge. It is outstanding riding switch, best board I have every owned in this respect. Havent weighed the board but it feels nice and light and doesn't hurt my knee riding up the lift.

I dont remember the "official" flex rating on this board but believe it was 7 or 8. For me it is just about right. Good pop, even flex from tip to tail with no obvious softer or stiffer points. It would take more effort and muscle than I have to butter this board but thats really not what its made for. It is very stable and damp in the crud, although not quite as damp as my T.Rice was.

The mans board has performed nicely in what little powder I have found this year. The rocker in the nose is noticeable in helping keep the nose up which makes up for its stiff nose. Plenty of float and no leg burn here.

The base is fast and durable, have hit some buried trees and rocks without any damage so far. It is much faster than my T.Rice was and holds wax better than the rice ever did. I do have a 1 inch chip in the top sheet on the tail of the board already but it didnt lift up the material around it which is good.

So far the only thing I have to complain about this board is that if you put your bindings on the markers for a centered stance it puts you at a 24 inch stance. Like I said i am 6'2" but am unusual in that I have a really long torso and relatively short legs (32"inseam). I have had to play around quite a bit to find the optimal stance on this board in relation the setback/edge and am still in the process of experimenting.

Overall I am very happy with the Salomon Mans Board. I have had very little learning curve with it and have been extremely pleased with its float in powder and its excellent feel while riding switch. Its not a board that is life changing for me but it doesn't get in my way and doesn't have any nasty surprises. Predictable, poppy, solid build, excellent pow, fun switch just a great all around freeride board that will allow me to focus on improving my riding and not on my board.
