Lake Ohau Snow Fields NZ

Hey Guys Am planning on spending a few days at Ohau NZ Snowboarding this year on way through from Mt hutt To Wanaka. Whats it like has anyone boarded there before . It sure looks nice and relaxed. What is the terrain like? Cant seem to get much info on this place. Is it worth a few days ? What have you experiences been? Thanks heaps!

I have not boarded as Lake Ohau as such- but have in both porters and mt cheesman, from my experiences NZ club fields are great. Mt Cheesman is my fav place to go in NZ and is worth a look if you want to travel that way (can then see glaciers on your way to Wanaka as well) It would just be a little more driving. Only note is that these are not huge fields, but lots of untraced stuff and little crowds if you go during the week. Hope that helps in some way.

Ohau is great, especially if they have fresh snow. The mountain road is pretty sketchy though, especially if its had snow. Friends of ours got caught in an avalance on it a couple years ago.
There's one lift which is ridiculously slow but if you hike to the top and round the ridges theres some great terrain and its usually fairly untracked. Unless there getting fresh snow I wouldn't look to spend more than three days there. I can't remember but I think eftpos services up the mountain might be limited or non existant so I'd look to take cash up. The hotel at the bottom of the hill is great with a sweet restaurant/bar and spa pool for relaxing afterwards. Also get some Tiki tour groups going through there so can be quite the party cranking but usually pretty mellow.

All in all I've only had good experiences there and there's enough to keep you busy for a couple days though you might have to get creative with some things...but thats the best way to progress aint it?

I'd say that it's one of the classics in New Zealand. I spent two seasons there and LOVE it.

Just don't go there and be a wanker. This gem of a resort demands respect.

Ohau I love to ride

Ohau is fantastic. Good terrain, lots of hiking if you choose. Good when there's fresh snow...good in the spring...AND a surprisingly fun little park.

I don't think the road is that sketchy, but then again I've never been caught in an avalanche on that road! Like most NZ ski field roads, you just got to drive to the conditions and not be a dick.
