Aspen is a world class ski town with world class ski areas. It also comes at a premium. They have an airport so you can fly right into Roaring Fork Valley. It looks like a rather "exciting" airstrip. You'll know what I mean when you fly in and out. As far as close to the slopes lodging goes. Is you stay anywhere in the town of Aspen, you should be within walking distance of the slopes. Staying in Snowmass should also give you quick access. They also have a bus system that will get you to all the areas that surround Aspen. So no matter where you stay, you can get to the slopes easily enough.

If you fly into DIA, you'll definitely have to rent a vehicle. The drive is around 4 hours to Aspen from Denver. Generally I70 is pretty decent, especially after you get past Vail Pass, but it can also be very nasty if the storms are rolling through. You'd go over two major passes, Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. Glennwood Canyon can be no joke too.

Gray Line goes between DIA and Aspen. You might try the airport in Eagle too. Personally I would fly into Aspen. You don't need a car once you are there. The bus system is free. Take the bus from the airport. It's right next to the highway. Flights into Aspen can be rerouted due to bad weather.
Don't try going to Aspen during the X Games. You'll never find a room. The hostel beds in the St. Moritz are the cheapest commercial digs in town. It comes with breakfast too. The ski shuttle stop is about 2 blocks away.
