Default Alberta 2010, first time! all advice needed!

Hey Everyone!
I have only just signed up to this forum so first of all i would like to say hello!
I Am travelling out to canada in 10 weeks - eek! I will be travelling around for a few months and then want to do an entire season in alberta from november until april/may 2011.

Thing is, i have never been snowboarding before, but i am really drawn to it and just have a gut feeling that i will absolutely love it!

Im just wondering where exactly i should do an entire season? I want to work at the same time, in a cafe/hotel or something, and potentially go boarding with those i work with/meet and get into the whole community and spirit of it as well as learn!

I've heard great things about lake louise, although some say its not for absolute beginners? Others say its better to go to sunshine village but its a bit clichy (is that how you spell clichy? cleeky? ) so i was just wondering if anyone could give me any adivce? best places to work? best place to go and learn and get the whole experience?

also anything other tips? ive heard its best to wait to get gear until im out there and then to buy second hand - anywhere inparticular around that area (banff) that i should head to to get kitted out?

Sorry i know its a lot of questions but i really am starting from scratch and i need some good old fashioned honesty and a point in the right direction, because obviously wherever i research the websites say how brilliant it is!

Cheers guys,

Roz

If you're coming out here in 10 weeks you won't have any snow to ride on so hopefully you're planning on staying longer if you wanna ride, the season here opens around mid november and doesnt get good until mid to end of december depending on snowfall. Lake louise and sunshine both have easy runs but sunshine has a bit better learning hill, the only shitty thing with sunshine is once you go on the main runs you will encounter some nasty flat and uphill parts. Banff is about 10 mins from sunshine so there should be plenty of work there if you're not on the hill and lake louise is about 40 mins from banff.

If you wanna buy gear I suggest buying in the summer as there should be lots to choose from and for cheap. Some good used sites in alberta are kijiji.ca and buysell.com.

Banff is a full on tourist town and is definately a nice place sometimes but I could never imagine living there. I live in calgary which is one of the 2 major cities in alberta and im about 90 mins from banff which is a nice easy drive if you ever need big city shops or a nice selection of hookers. You can pm me if you have any other questions. Good luck out here!

Depends where you're coming from? If you're coming from the States it's cheaper to buy there, especially now, when the late season sales have started.
Banff sounds like a good bet for you, it's a big enough town to keep you interested and you'll meet plenty of people. There's loads of resorts around Alberta/BC but Banff is the closest thing to a city, there's stuff to do when you're not riding. And yeah, Sunshine is beginner-friendly.

If you're looking for a job that'll pay the bills and you can meet people, apply for a job on the hill at Sunshine. You'll meet stacks of people and get a free season pass. They usually start recruiting August or so, earlier if you're international (i.e Australian).

I've done a couple of seasons in Canada (BC/Alberta), if you have any questions ask away

Hey, cheers guys for your responses! loads of help.
Im coming from England, will head out to eastern canada and then move across and be in alberta by november. can easily apply for jobs on the internet around august time when im out there so that will be the plan! will be nice to have it set up before i get there too. Or maybe even head over there a bit earlier to get cheap gear/take a look around.

sounds like sunshine will be the place to base myself and then can venture over to banff/calgary/lake louise as i go!

getting really excited about it!

Thanks for your help,
Roz

Empire Skateboards-Snowboards || store.thinkempire.com - Shop our Online Skate & Snowboard Shop if you're on the east coast, think they're based in Montreal. Otherwise there's tons of board shops in Toronto too, I remember a good one on King when I was there earlier this year.

Enjoy, you'll have awesome fun
