Depends where you're coming from? If you're coming from the States it's cheaper to buy there, especially now, when the late season sales have started.
Banff sounds like a good bet for you, it's a big enough town to keep you interested and you'll meet plenty of people. There's loads of resorts around Alberta/BC but Banff is the closest thing to a city, there's stuff to do when you're not riding. And yeah, Sunshine is beginner-friendly.
If you're looking for a job that'll pay the bills and you can meet people, apply for a job on the hill at Sunshine. You'll meet stacks of people and get a free season pass. They usually start recruiting August or so, earlier if you're international (i.e Australian).
