Keystone This Year

Any word on the snow coverage in Summit County thus far? We were in Winter Park last year in early December and the snow was great. I'm sitting on a reservation for the second weekend in December at Keystone.

How is the snow shaping up in comparison with last year? I see they only have 4/135 trails open at the moment, but wasn't sure if there is more coverage at this point.

Going to be keeping an eye on this going forward. Let me know what you Colorado folk are seeing out there!

Historically, Keystone is the worst for snowfall out of just about all the resorts this time of year. Lake Dillon isn't frozen over yet, and until that happens, Keystone gets the short end of the stick snowfall wise.

The theory is that the warm air coming off of Dillon acts as a defector shield and sends storms around Keystone. Lot's of snowfall history that seems to prove this.

Of course any year things can be better or worse. Last year was an exceptional season. I can only think of one or two seasons in over 20 years that were as decent that time of year in early December. So in other words, I would hope for a repeat, but I wouldn't count on it.

Hey Kill--thanks for the quick response.

Is A-Basin any better, or does it get the same lake effect? We are staying at Keystone, but being a Vail Property I think we can choose to ski at Breck, A-Basin, and a couple of others.

A-Basin gets a lot more snow. As for the tickets and where you can ride, no clue. I always just buy a pass. I haven't been to Keystone in two years.

Linville is right, A-Basin (and Loveland for that matter) doesn't seem to be effected in the way Keystone is. I have no idea why. The only thing I can say about A-Basin at that time of year is that the coverage is still generally thing and it's the rockiest resort around. Good place for core shots. Though if the snows come, it could be pretty good. Otherwise I'd just had on over to Breck.

We were at Breck last year in February. It wasn't awful, but we liked Keystone and Vail much more. I don't know why. We will most likely give it another go--at least for a day. If for no other reason because it is so close!

Thanks again for all of the feedback. Excited to get out there this year.

We are also headed to Vail in February so we have some fun times ahead.
