Visiting Steamboat and Frisco - Advice
A couple of buddies and I are going to colorado for a week. We are leaving end of next week. We're first gonna hit up steamboat for a couple of days then head down to frisco to stay the rest of the week. From there we're probably gonna hit up vail and copper.
Wanted some advice/pointers in regards to driving. Based on google maps I can only really see 2 options from Denver to Steamboat:
I-70 and get on to the 40 right around Douglas Mountain (im just basing this off gmaps)
I've heard some not so good things abt the Eishenhower tunnel so I was wondering whether the 2nd option would be a good idea if there was some issue at the tunnel? Sorry, not familiar with US freeways and highways let alone Colorado.
Also, if we're staying in Frisco, will we encounter any issues driving to Vail or Copper if the weather starts to get bad? Just want to know the common bottlenecks.
Any advice for grub in or around Steamboat and Frisco?
Thanks in advance!
Keep us posted! I'll be staying in Frisco that first week in February, hitting up Breckenridge and probably Keystone, Vail, or Copper.
As far as WB through the tunnel, it really only gets bad on Sunday or possibly Saturday after 1 PM or so. If you are heading WB on I70 through the tunnel on Sunday, I would suggest doing it before or around noon to avoid the worst of it.
Now, as far as Frisco to copper, you shouldn't really see any problems with that. Even if the weather is bad. However, sometimes they do close vail pass, which could block your way to vail. I've only ever seen this if the weather is crazy bad or there is some terrible wreck. If the weather is just normal bad, then its just a slow drive but nothing should stop you. Yet again, I would suggest leaving Frisco early to make it to Vail for first chair. That will provide the least amount of problems and most likely the smallest possible crowd at any one resort.
Just reverse Toomeyct's EB and WB and he is right on regarding the tunnel traffic.
The "standard" drive to Steamboat is 70 -> 9 -> 40. The only reason I would go the other way is if you know the tunnel traffic is bad.
