Default Colorado Question/Recommendation

We are looking to escape the current lack of snow in the PNW and are considering going to Colorado.

Our question is if we fly into to Denver is there a resort that is within a 4 hour drive that would be less crowded than the big ones closer to Denver?

Any recommendations? Our budget wouldn't allow for more expensive or second flights to smaller towns and time constraints allow for 2 travel days for 3 days on the slopes.

Also would a 4wd be required or strongly recommended?

Thanks.

Sounds like you want Wolf Creek or Monarch but you better be ready for that adventure. I'd suggest Steamboat but that would probably be too expensive. Breck and Vail are really huge and if you can go mid week in march you it won't seem so crowded even though its spring break.

Go to aspen If you want a big resort or Mountain, go to aspen.

If you're good with small places you can hit monarch or wolf creek.

Wolf Creek is in the bullseye right now. Considering a trip down there this weekend myself.

Also, I'd recommend 4x4 or AWD simply because the rentals almost always have shitty tires. Shitty tires + 2wd = suck.

Thanks for the quick replies. Mid-week won't be an option, Sat-Wed with Sat and Wed as travel days.

Steamboat is a bit spendy at least from our limited research.

We'll have to plug in some numbers for flights, lodging and car rental and see what is feasible.

Our fall back is SLC, super convenient between cheap flights, moderate priced lodging and shuttles that make 4wd unnecessary.

Snowing hard at Wolf Creek. Looks like a perfect place for us, lots of terrain, plenty of lifts and a little remote. Looks like flights line up nicely for the flight/drive there from Seattle.

Any recommendations for lodging? Hot tubs are a big bonus. South Fork vs Pagosa? We stayed a couple of nights in Pagosa a couple of summers ago and enjoyed ourselves.

Is Monarch worth a day or if we went would you spend all 3 days at Wolf Creek?

Now I will give you one warning with Wolf Creek. As you know, there is no lodging at the mountain and you'll have to stay in either South Fork or Pagosa. Never stayed in either, so can't give you any advice either way there. BUT, the one major issue with Wolf Creek when they're in the bullseye is that those passes close fairly often, so there's a chance that you get down there and it's dumping and you can't even get to the mountain.

Just fair warning.

Thanks for the warning. Our luck this year would be spending a lot of money to find a couple of days with snow and getting snowed out.

Does Monarch have on mountain lodging? We are having a hard time deciding Colorado, Utah or not going at all. We usually drive to Schweitzer but they have half the mountain closed and no new snow in sight.

I have spent a lot of time in wolf creek. We usually stayed in Pagosa springs. They have a hot springs there that's great with an attached resort. Just pay attention to road conditions and leave town early to have breakfast at the lodge, at wolf creek, when it's dumping. We never got snowed out with plenty of 20+" snow days. South fork doesn't have much going on, as in nothing. Pagosa has little going on but definitely has shopping, restaurants and stuff to do.
