I am living in a little log cabin about a 5 mile hike into the woods on national park land. I have no running water or electric just a wood burning stove/oven. I smell like I havent showered in days and turning heads when I go to town/ Is there anywhere in summit county that offers free showers?

What are you doing out there for entertainment? You alone?

I'm all for a short camp trip, but to live like that, wow.

Not hating, I think it's interesting to say the least. However, I could never do it as a home situation.

A YMCA or asking to use the bathroom at a health club (and then doing a quick shower) would probably be your best bet for a quick fix.

Other than that, you should be able to bath yourself fairly well with a bar of soap, a washcloth, a tub (like, a metal or wooden one that is big enough for you to stand in) and a little over a gallon of water. This is how people who do not have easy access to water bathe themselves.

I had to do this once when my former roommate left town for a week without paying the water bill!

If you stock up on water (just get some jugs and refill them at water fountains or other watering holes) then you should be able to stock enough H2O to last a week at a time.

Disclaimer: if you have a way to heat the water before you use it, then the process is much more bearable.

-EDIT-
If you stink bad enough to turn heads...then stock up on washcloths too.
Also, your basin for washing clothes should be able to double as your basin for washing yourself (assuming it is big enough)

Aquire an old steel bath tub from the local land fill. Prop it up on bricks outside and build a small fire underneath it. Fill it full of snow (presuming you're in the mountains) and jump in when its at a bath able temp.

Like to shower instead? Grab one of those things hikeswithdogs suggested, or go the ghetto version and find a couple of 20L paint pales, knock about 12-20 2mm holes within a 5inch area in the bottom of one of them, hang the pale in a tree. Get all your wash cloth and showering stuff ready by the tree, heat approx 10L of water and tip it into the pale - then get under it quick...use a construction pallet as a shower mat and maybe (depending on how far out in the wilderness) put up some form of shade cloth (also aquireable from a land fill or jumble seller) around it so that people can't see you showering.

Other places to get a cheap shower - YMCA, Public Baths etc etc

Besides going to hotels and stealing showers and continental breakfasts the only other way to get a free shower in summit county is go to dillon FIRC. They will direct you to a church that has free showers wed and fri 1-4pm by downtown dillon. I hate churches and will continue to bathe at the starbucks/subway bathrooms.

I was living in LA for awhile working at a starbucks and doing stand up comedy at night. one day I said fuck it and left for colorado. when getting picked up at the airport my roommate and long time friend told me that the guy we were renting from had a heroin addiction, but he was going to be clean cause my buddy talked him into quiting his job as a car salesman and he would be too broke to buy drugs. WTF was my response. Heroin addicts will not stop herion if they run out of money. Basically I lived in Dillon Valley for 2 weeks with the junkie. One day I was locked out and pounding on the door. He was just sitting there spaced out while I was screaming at him to open the door/ it was time to leave i was ready to kick this kids ass. My other roomie and I were going to buy a trailor and park it on national forest land, when I remembered that there are cabins in the woods that not a lot of people go to. so we went camping in the coldest part of this winter early-mid december. One night my roomie woke me up and told me that he was cold. I gently told him "Put wood on the fire you pussy." When light hit I looked at him and he was grey looking suffering from hypothermia, we left the cabin to find something a little warmer... his car. I lived in a car and had a fucking roommate, once a cop found us and could not believe two people were sleeping in a car. Currently I live in a nice pad and i dont smell like a wild animal. This was a crazy part of my life that took some years off of it. I have one picture of the cabin and I but im not sure if im ready to post nudes of myself.

I know this is an old thread (not even sure how much is true!?! :dunno:) but my old house was fed by a cistern. I had a 10x10x10 or so concrete chamber in the ground. It was completely fed by my roof alone. It supplied ALL my water, bathing, flushing, cooking, drinking.

I'm in a subdivision now, but if/when I build out in the country again, I WILL be going back to the cistern way of life.

I actually was living with a buddy out there who took the pic. I was chopping wood and was working up such a sweat that I took my clothes off and kept at it. Nobody came by while we were staying there so being naked outside was not a big deal. I wasnt living out there too long cause my buddy suffered from hypothermia one night and I helped him back to civilization. If anyone lives near Dillon Valley the trailhead starts near the water plant. when it forks stay to the right. its about 6 miles in right off the trail all uphill. Give yourself many hours of daylight because getting there takes awhile. coming back is a breeze and only takes about an hour. If by some chance the cabin is occupied stay on the trail and in about 7 minutes you will find another cabin.
