Well ski resort wise...

A statistical breakdown of the 2011-12 season’s 17 inbounds fatalities looks like this:

14 skiers / 3 snowboarders
15 males / 2 females
12 wearing a helmet / 5 not wearing a helmet
8 from Colorado / 9 from out of state
7 deaths were caused by trauma from collisions with a tree
11 died while skiing groomed beginner or intermediate runs / 6 were on expert runs
5 died in March, 5 in Febraury, 5 in January and 2 in November
5 died at Keystone ski area
3 died in the days following their accident
The youngest person who died was 15 and the oldest was 72

Of the 17 deaths in the 2007-2008 ski season:
15 males / 2 females
9 deaths were caused by collisions with trees while skiing groomed beginner or intermediate runs / 8 were on expert runs
4 died at Keystone ski area
17 inbounds deaths at Colorado ski resorts matches 2007-08 record | All Things Colorado Sports ? Colorado sports news blog ? The Denver Post

You might be better off riding at a different ski area...

Probably because there are almost twice as many skiers as snowboarders on the mountains in Colorado. Especially at Keystone...
That would make sense then, wonder what the overall percentage would be if there were equal amounts of both skiers and boarders
Natural selection will always eliminate skiers at a much faster rate than boarders.

Overall, the last I read about what the percentages of rider vs skiers in the us were it was hovering around 40% rider 60% skier. That was an average. Some spots will have much less snowboarders and others like Brighton, Baker, probably Tahoe would have a much higher percentage of riders.

I wonder where the skiers were when they lost control....for example, were they at the trail edge in the soft snow pushed out there from all the traffic, or did they blow an edge center trail and go careening off into the woods coming around a corner?

when I see people hugging the trail edge I think nothing good is going to happen if they catch an edge. And I cringe on some of the hairpin turns out there, even on the "toll road" type cruisers in New England.

Groomers are the number 1 killers. The slope makes it easy to achieve a higher level of speed. Add to it that a large portion of these people are not experts. Lose control, go crashing into trees, other skiers, lift towers, and you get the end result of death. It has always been this way.

I saw the aftermath on St pattys day when some idiot didnt look both ways crossing 6 and was smashed by a drunk driver. I was working at keystone when a heli landed right outside of my work.

Also fun rumor. A dude from georgia was found in the trees a couple of months ago, I cant remember which run, but was airlifted out. Apparently when he was found he was frozen solid. the dude had been out there all night. the papers did not report this.

I bet Keystone's over board mountain safety does nothing to prevent the deaths. In the 7 seasons I have rode this mountain I have seen the traffic fences they put up get more stupid every year. They will put up traffic fences across runs that are suppose to slow people down. All these fences do is bottle neck the runs and force people closer together. Keeping a good distance from people is the best way to avoid a skier collision.

One season they put a fence across Spring Dipper early season on a steep section. It was so dangerous and icy. It was hard to get through there without nearly getting hit from people falling. People started to complain on their facebook page and the mountain removed the dangerous fence.

Last season they put up a bunch of stupid fences in the beginner park.

I hate no jumping signs. Keystone has a lot of them. They will normally have a yellow jacket standing around guarding the roller picking his butt or something. I think mountain watch would be more successful if they cruised around and looked for reckless people.

Beaver Creek is ridiculous with their mountain safety. They put up fake mountain watch dummies. It's like when the police park unmaned police cars to prevent speeding. If Keystone did this, the dummie would be naked and picked clean.

I just have to throw in that I broke my tib/fib last year at the ankle thanks to an idiot sitting under a blind roller at Keystone. Black run and he had to have been sitting there at least a minute....I was pretty pissed. Not another person to be seen either... arghh. 10 years snowboarding and never a collision. Learned a valuable lesson for sure though.

Anyways, I'm taking it out on the first person I see pulling that crap this year lol

There is a nice roller on schoolmarm. They put one of those dumb traffic fences across it last season. The one good thing is when they take it down for night skiing. Since it gets sprayed so much, natural booters form and they are the best poppers.

I don't drop nothing if I can't see what I am going to land into. You need a spotter if your going to bomb and not look. Don't depend on people having common sense. I can't just ride over a roller. I look out for everyone on the mountain and don't blindly drop stuff.

I can get a lot of air and I take a lot of precautions to avoid everyone. I fucking hate people and don't want them near me on the mountain. They stress me out. I really hope it snows a lot so I can be in my natural environment and avoid everyone.

word.

Looking out for people ahead is 101 and if people ahead are fuckin' up, it's your job to skool 'em so they learn and don't get seriously hurt!

how's Key been, besides irritating traffic fences?
