I came home early from work and it's coming down pretty hard. There is about a half ich that's actually stuck on the ground now. Hope it continues through the night. It was 45 degrees today so the ground was hot...
Within 5-20 min of my OP, the weather forecast changed to almost a week of snow graphics. I am predicting, albeit wildly, that the rest of moon cycle, until back to full, will be wet for the whole west.
How was Breck? I think I'm heading there tomorrow.
Someone just sent me a picture of Vail at the Vista Bahn lift - grass everywhere and not even any connected snow spots to where you could even try to get down... You'd have to unstrap about 5x in a couple hundred feet.
Just found this link from Angry Snowboarder, not sure if it was from today or not (thats what it seems to imply, but then again they did a VERY quick edit job to have this on the internet already):
Better slow down guys. Forecasters are starting to backpedal and usually when that happens, they don't backpedal enough. Oh well, we should be used to it by now. I can't remember a single storm all season that wasn't a disappointment.
New snow will be an issue by Sunday morning. It will take several inches of snow on Saturday to cover and smooth out the old snow surface. Then wind slab and storm snow avalanches will be possible within the new snow. The amount of snow in the local area will dictate the avalanche hazard, with more snow making larger and more dangerous triggered avalanches more likely. The Front Range from Berthoud Pass north could see very intense snowfall Saturday night. Rapid loading makes for unstable snow, and storm snow avalanches could be easy to trigger on Sunday. These slabs can be deceptively soft, and run on hard to notice changes in the storm snow. Winds will be gusty enough to drift snow into soft wind slabs. Expect to find some thickening wind slabs near and above treeline on the eastern aspects.
Spring powder chuting at Bert still looks like a strong possibility. Though once again, if it comes in strong, could be too much of a good thing. Plenty of trees to play in I suppose...
Yeah, fuck, in the last 10 hours this storm has gone strange. I think we might get skunked this weekend here up north.
I will be up on Tuesday for yet another spring day. Considering I have not had sunny spring riding days for about 3 years, this has been a good year for those sort of days here in COlorado (looking on the bright side of things).
Fuck it. I'm done looking at predictions. It's pretty clear at this point no one knows what the fuck this storm is gonna do. I'll just wake up in the morning and check the reports and see what we're looking at.
The snow wasn't supposed to start in earnest until after the resorts were closed today. That has been the case the whole time they've been predicting this. Tomorrow's reports are what we should care about.
I was at Breck today (which wasn't that bad, better than sitting on the couch), and I could see some storms forming to the South. Don't know if the intended path is supposed to head north or whatever, but the clouds were pretty dark.
Hopefully it brings something, if so I'll drive right back up tomorrow. I made it home (Lakewood) from Breck in an hour and 7 minutes.
It's all good at Loveland! South Chutes were awesome this morning. Everything is starting to get tracked out, but the snow is soft, so no complaints. Snow snakes are definitely lurking though. My buddy took about a 3" x 1" chunk out of the base of his NS SL.
A basin was a lot of fun today. it feels weird typing that. however the montezuma bowl was closed. lot of powder more than I was expecting. it was still dumping when i left so tomorrow might be another pow day?
