Colorado's Echo Mountain ski area for sale in August auction - The Denver Post
Hopefully it'll keep running, but in order to do so, they HAVE to ditch that General Manager. She's burning bridges as fast as she can light fires. The entire staff hates her and other local businesses and organizations don't want to partner up with Echo any longer because you can't work with her. She thinks she runs Vail Resorts or something. Any "partnership" with Echo turns into her trying to dictate everything while asking for an exorbitant share of the proceeds.

Last time it went for $750k.
They have significant hurdles for future growth. Size being the primary one and access being the other. With their size, they're forced to be park only and Squaw pass road is a PITA. Lately they've been trying to market themselves as more than just a park, but they need to give that up and just focus on being the best park they can be, not just settle for randomly tossing features out on the slope.

Snowfall being another problem. They don't get nearly as much as the big boys along the divide and West. I had not heard the problems with the GM, but I am not surprised. Big fish in a little pond syndrome is common.

I live half an hour from it and my job is market development.
But, I have neither the resources nor the desire to try to run a half ass snow sliding establishment.

While they may not have the snow, their conditions are better primed than any of a dozen other parks in the midwest and east that produce good riders and film. The proximity of other mountains is a poor excuse for their bad business.
Echo's problem is that being park only, they need to figure out how to slay that shit, learn from places like Woodward and Breck/Keystones parks. Squaw pass does suck and accessibility will never change, they need to be selling progression and hotlaps.

Not saying that their park sucks, it is supposed to be decent. The problem is as everyone has alluded to is terrain. On top of that, even if you do expand your terrain, if you don't have the snow fall to support it, it still sucks. The big boys have both the parks, the terrain, and the snow fall (well most years...). It is hard to compete with. I wish that wasn't true, but it is.
Can't say I am surprised by this turn of events. I do think someone could run a successful model here too though. |
