Since they were old, they probably still had their prejudice beliefs against snowboarders that had been ingrained into their heads from their friends and family during their youth. Just like how my 94 year old grandmother thinks it's perfectly acceptable to loudly talk about how she hates colored folk in public when colored folk are around.
By the way I timed the hike up to Mirkwood on Tuesday and it only took about 12-15 minutes. This was the 10th or so time I've done it but never kept track of the time. I find knowing what you are up against makes a big difference.
It is mostly stair-steep, but what you can see from the bottom IS the top.
People used to hiking UP with a pack at 12k' will find it quite easy to do in 10 minutes. Someone out of shape but with the gumption to do it can make it happen in under 20.
Cool shit back there when conditions allow. Once you get on the cattrack runout at the bottom don't slow down.
It was snowing yesterday when I left the county to go to SIA. Not even remotely worried about the weather. Also how the fuck do you people live down here. SAVAGES, fucking savages.
That is good news about the snow. I would not live here if I could make a living where I want to, but the wife likes all the city stuff that I hate (used to live in various locations on western slope). I work within biking distance to my job, so I ride the bike to work every day, it's not a real "commute" so that makes a big difference. Wife works from home now so we are not caught in the commuter hell that we used to deal with. Have a modest little house that is very nice, so that makes up for some of it...
Bwahahaahahhha! that's awesome! Having spent almost 20 years in CA? I'm not sure I would have raised an eyebrow seeing that! My first job after being discharged from the Navy, was the graveyard shift at a 7-11 in SanClemente. It was across from a little dinner theater that had a Female Impersonator act running. So come 2:30-3:00am, I got a rush of business from the theater troupe on their way out.
They ran the entire gamut from straight guys, (...well, as straight as you can be working in a dress & heels!) who just looked the part when in drag! To gay's, pre Op Tranny's, and those that had gone whole hog and had twigs n berries snipped!!!
After having lived thru that? Your "Salli Babba" tranny hooker would just be business as usual! Amazing what you can get used to after a while!
it's really hard when you have lived in the mountains for years and never thought you would live in the City, but then life throws some curve ball at you and you end up back in the City. Now I am getting depressed.... :facepalm1:
Rode vail this morning, hit the hottub with a beer and going out for a hike now. Fronts idea was alright, still full coverage and snow supposedly coming in.... Will be at copper tomorrow for SIA and banked slalom. Ski cooper Saturday and Sunday for sbx.....
A friend and I are going to be in Breckenridge from the 1st to the 5th. As long as it's not too icy we can deal with the lack of snow. I've been spoiled on my last two trips with 6-12" falling everyday.
What I'm trying to get across is the stoke is strong. I've not ever boarded when the sun was out! Gotta look at the positive.
On the 8,9 it looks like April weather. My last day on the mountain on the 10th, it doesn't say snow, sun, or even rain, it says motherfreakin ICE!?!? WTF?
That was calm. I guess I dont follow the weather through the year enough to know. Of course, when I spend money to go there, I expect mother nature to cooperate.
Long range still looks like suck, but at least there's an outside chance of a surprise early this week. Hoping that we can squeeze some decent snow out of this system, though it seems far more likely that we get some dust on crust. Still hoping though.
Breckenridge/Summit County forecast. It started snowing early this morning dropping about an inch or two below the resort which usually equals about double that up on the high. The winds have been minimal and it's still slightly snowing out there and should the rest of the day.
Wednesday has a decent chance of being a sleeper pow day IMO. Joel has been under-forecasting for slopes near the divide during westerly flow with good moisture and slightly warm temps forever. He just can't quite get away from his bias that the combo doesn't work. Maybe it doesn't according to the textbooks, but it seems like that scenario has paid off well more often than not in recent years. Here's to hoping it does again!
I noticed that too. Normally he's pretty accurate or under predicts, but this year he's been so far off. I can't even see the switch back on Ski Hill from Main Street. The whole mountain is socked in and there's probably an inch on the sidewalk outside the shop right now, I shoveled it an hour ago.
Vail reported 1" and it probably was 4" by 8:30. It just stopped snowing at 1130 on the western side of the mountain when I came home. Probably snowed another 2-3" between 830 and 1130. There aren't many people in town or on the mountain. Probably less crowded that's usual. The next 2 weeks should be insane though.
I was at Copper today as well, and SIA was there..
We got up a bit late but I managed to catch the snowcat with an SIA crew, was windy as hell up top. Rosie's was an ice rink. There were better spots on the mountain, but I was surprised how solid it was in places, also serious crust over by the Blackjack lift (under the new 4" approx). they even had a "spring Conditions" sign out. I have never seen that in early February before.
the day before that, I was lucky enough to join Killclimbz for a nice splitboard tour in the sunshine, far away from Summit County. Had my best run of the season.
Steamboat was amazing yesterday. Morning side was shin deep and the mountain wasn't packed so it was fresh hits till last run. :jumping1:
