Epic local pass arrived today. Plane ticket for 13th to the 22nd purchased to SLC and me and a buddy are driving up Colo. Come on snow gods. I need you now.
So me and my friends are thinking about heading up to Colorado for Thanksgiving break. Good idea? We are down here from New Mexico around the Socorro area, and we are superbly anxious to get out on the slopes. My question is would it be worth trip to Colorado within the next few weeks? Also, first timer in Colo this season. Any advice would help gents!
Some friends just hit me up, they want to drive up to the Thunderhead lift and then hike up to the steep and deep stuff. I can't wait to try out my Nitro Slash.
Just remember, if there's enough snow to ride, there's enough snow to slide.
In other news, I hope they're working double time to get this I-70 construction between Idaho Springs and Eisenhower Tunnel wrapped up because that stretch is every bit as fucked right now as it was all last season and this summer.
I don't think it's supposed to be done until just before Christmas.
Good point on the enough snow to ride enough to slide point linville.
Some highlights from the CAIC summary.
CAIC said:
Your tour into the backcountry will likely discover a complex set of snowpack conditions. There were several avalanches reported from around the state during this storm cycle. It is now officially game on avalanche season, time to focus the avalanche eyeballs on the task at hand.
After the early November storm cycle freshly formed slab may behaving like Persistent Slab avalanches in areas where the slabs overlie well developed facets. Be aware that these fresh slabs might be triggered from surprising locations like near the bottom of the slop, or from a distance.
With a nice weather weekend on tap riders will be tempted to push into new (for the season) terrain. Consider the consequences of being caught in even a small avalanche before you cross any steep, snow-covered slope. Getting raked through rocks is not the way to start the season. The new snow is covering what was previously bare ground on most slopes. It may look much better than it is, and there will be many shallowly buried obstacles.
Keep it in mind folks. It's very early season. The coverage is not there. Mellow terrain can be fun this time of year. No need to risk ending your season before it's even started.
So how about this shit where they're trying to slap a bunch of HS kids with child pornography charges for trading nekkid pics with one another? What in the fuck is that going to accomplish? Kids will do dumb shit, but getting kids labeled as sex offenders for dumb kid mistakes? That's incredibly stupid and that's a mistake being made by adults in powerful positions.
Yeah. It's using laws on the books - good laws, I should add - but not using them for their intended purpose. No lawmaker intended for child pornography laws to be used to prosecute HS kids for trading nekkid pics. That's ridiculous.
They were trading pics like baseball cards. Heard it might even involve middle schoolers. Some kind of contest.........hidden apps on their phones.......
Rumor around town is that it was a digruntled employee or patron that wanted to bring down the lift. I assume he wasn't trying to hurt anyone but rather hurt the company.
One of my most memorable times at steamboat was when the mountain was socked in and visibility was about 20'. Everyone was riding the trees cause it was easier to see. I was making powder turns down the middle of a run at noon in a foot of fresh snow
