When the roads are as bad as they were this weekend, part of me kind of wishes they would enforce chain law for passenger cars like in Utah, but with snowtires rather than chains. If you don't have snowtires, you aren't allowed on the road. I think that would not only make sure that vehicles are properly equipped for the conditions, but would inherently weed out all the dumbasses that are causing accidents in the first place. I have no empirical data to support my position, but I'm betting that none of the cars that caused accidents yesterday had snowtires.

They either didn't have snow tires, or good tires at all for that matter. I am willing to bet most should have bought new tires. Can't really force people to have snow tires but you can certainly require chains for people if they don't have 'em. Chains work just fine.

Or you can quit following the rest of the herd to Summit county. Even on the worst weekends it is such an easier drive if you stop at the tunnel or bleed off somewhere else before it when headed west.

4wd doesn't mean shit without decent tires. But, the biggest issue isn't equipment. There's just a bunch of fucking idiots out there. I don't care what they're driving, they're gonna fuck shit up. Give them a well equipped vehicle with the best snow tires on the planet and instead of driving safely with some sense, they'll do their best Ken Block impersonation with predictable results.

^this. I have 4 snows on my WRX and still drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions. I had asshats passing me yesterday morning at speeds that must have been 70mph.

All 4WD does is help you get moving. It doesn't help you stay on the road, and it doesn't help you stop. A front wheel drive car with snowtires is going to handle much better in the snow than an AWD car with all seasons. Despite the name, all season tires are not meant for driving on snow/ice.

I use 4x4 On deep snow days, slushy roads and uphill. I always switch to.2wheel on ice and downhill.
