The tree well thing in Colorado is weird. We don't have the Evegreens with big thick branchs that run way down to the base like in the PNW. Those types of trees really creat a hollow spot and with a deep snowpack a very dangerous trap.
Yet a few years ago I came across a stat on tree well deaths in the last 20 years or something and Colorado had the most.
There was one in Steamboat a few years ago. So it does happen but not very often. Tree well deaths also don't happen very often overall. The only thing I can think of as to why Colorado had more deaths is because we have more skier days than anywhere else in the nation by a long shot.
The tree wells in the west coast mountains are certainly more dangerous and require a healthy amount of respect.
Biggest crowd of the season today. All tourists from outta town this weekend. Bad weekend for resort riding, great weekend to make some money for local business!
I think breck had like 22,000 yesterday. Vail had 24,000 yesterday. It's more today. Sucks that shit is popping like crazy, I may just go tour....
Breck wasn't too bad today, but looking at the lift lines yesterday on the webcam it was scary. Anyone else see that giant slide on Imperial? Straight to the rocks.
Actually that was Nitro and it is fairly steep with a huge convexity on top. I took a few photos of the slide after it had happened. We were in first creek and saw all the emergency vehicles headed up. Glad it was a close call. That could have easily of been a killer. Lots of stuff to get banged into.
There is a reason why I do not play on that cliff line very often. I consider it one of the most dangerous places on the pass.
I took this shot at 930 this morning. Rode some nice powder going over the ridge behind my board. Maybe a few tracks crisscrossed the area.... Knee deep with a very little crust on top....
River Run has claimed many a person at the end of the day. I specifically down load the gondy in the preseason from that park they have rather than ride down that shit hole of a run. Then again Keystone sucks donkey balls and I try not to go there unless I am forced to.
I enjoy keystone (Outback has some awesome tree runs) but I never go down river run at the end of the day. It is an absolute ice sheet/fuck fest. On a happier note I'm heading back out to Colorado this weekend for the girlfriends 21st. Should be a blast. Any day on the slopes is better than the best day in Nebraska. :yahoo:
Today is a good groomer day. Most of the powder is slowly disappearing or crusting over.... Made some laps on our favorite rollers/cat tracks this morning.....
my stance looks kinda retarded here, photo is catching me as I land... but you can see my track...I'm just compressing on a little landing, sorta carving fast on the alpine...
get so few photos....hopefully do a little TR of monarch next week...hopefully a storm blows in...
Forecast stacking up well for the weekend. Looks like most areas should get double digit totals starting Wednesday through Friday night. Maybe I'll actually be able to make it up for the first time in damn near a month. Damn January! Convention/tradeshow season...
The only reason it's snowing is because of SIA. It likes to taunt those of us that are forced to be in Denver. I will proceed to go flog some bad idea to get my aggression out that I'm not sliding pow.
Lets hope for the forecast! I was expecting to see snow this AM.:thumbsdown:
As far BA's rant on Key vs the 'Fridge.....I'd rather ride Key over Breck any day. I'll deal with 'icy' conditions on River Run over wind blown, cold a$$ trails and all the freaking tourists and bros over in 'da hood any day.
There are a lot of zig-zagging noobs at Key that make it a nightmare to ride but more often than not its weekends only.
Things must have changed since I last went to Keystone about 4 years ago. Never seen so many "snow bros" in my life.
