Certainly looking much, much more positive but I'm not gonna get too excited just yet. I've learned my lesson putting too much stock into long range forcasts. Too many heartbreaks.
I was at Copper today (didn't make it out on Friday). Snow was pretty much as expected. It wasn't too icy to make holding and edge or carving impossible. Not worse than any other opening weekend that I remember. There was little to no snow on the adjacent runs but not like it matters anyway since they normally aren't open for the first couple of weeks regardless.
I did keystone today. It was not as bad as I thought. No lines at the lifts and not Icey. Was nice to do some full length runs. I'll be there Thursday too, unless breck opens then I'll go there instead.
When actually looking at them, they look the same. in all reality Copper is in no better condition than keystone but they did start to make more snow earlier because of the speed training center.
Anyone catch that Friends of CAIC had over 1000 dollars worth of merchandise stolen from them. Just saw it on their FB, hope who took them gets killed in an avalanche, or better survives but is incapacitated from the neck down and has to spend the rest of their life breathing through a tube.
Estes is a great little town. You'll love it. It's offseason for them and you'll have it to yourselves. Still plenty to do on the eastern side of the park. Pro tip: the moon is still big, do the Gem Lake hike at night once the moon is up good. Moonlit Gem Lake is a top 10 CO hike IMO.
Gem Lake is a must. With the weather coming in, Long's Peak is gonna be out, but you should still be able to do Chasm Lake and it's more than worth it. Definitely head up to Bear Lake and go up to Emerald Lake. You'll pass three other lakes on the way. Definitely go all the way t Emerald. Easy hike with great views.
Bringing both my Panasonic GH3 camera's. Would definitely like to do all that you suggested. This stop has less elevation than Break & Copper so the hikes would be welcomed. Here is my car ready for lift off.
I live about 12 mins from Estes, so it and Lyons are my "local" towns. Plenty to do there, but the weather will be dicey for hiking over the next several days.
