I know it's early, but damn, we need some snow.

Colorado | OpenSnow

That shit looks like a repeat of last season.

You think traffic is fucked on 70, try living up here. 45 minutes to drive 2 blocks now on weekends. Parking lots completely full by 8 a.m. to the point we have people poaching everywhere. It's gotten so out of hand and midweek isn't much better. Glad I'm off the Vail train and doing other things otherwise I probably would have killed someone in a lift line by now.

I really hope the housing market crashes as well as something catastrophic happens to Denver to stop all these fucktards that are ruining this state from staying or continuing to move here.

Damn, you guys are whiners!

Getting up or leaving by 5:30AM on a weekend is the norm for many of us in New England. If I want to be at the mountain for first chair, I'm normally on the road by or before 5AM.

All we heard from locals on Sunday and Monday was how crowded Copper was. Sure, the lift lines were a bit long, we had to wait in line a few times. But, once you got up off the lift, there's so many trails and they're so wide open that it really isn't a problem. Come ride Mt. Snow or Stratton on a busy day where you are literally weaving in and out of people on the trail, then we can talk. Or, come ride at Wachusett on a busy Saturday where you'll wait the same 10, 15 or 20 minutes to get on the lift, however, the summit is a whopping 2,000' and you're back in line before you know it.

I suppose Breck, Vail, etc. could be even worse than Copper was Sunday/Monday of a holiday weekend, but it could have been much worse, IMO.

It's a better comparison to compare Colorado to what it was 5, 10, 20 years ago then to compare it to the east. This is not the east. For some of us, this is our home.

To put it another way, do you justify overcrowding every place in the world just because certain places already are?

I get what you're saying and I'm not trying to justify the overcrowding there, I'm just giving you guys a hard time because you have some of the best snow and mountains in the world, yet are here whining about it.

Also, the East is our home, so that's a bit of an odd statement, but I know what you're getting at.

That's pretty awesome. I'm a sucker for the X-Games and love watching the Slope-style, Half-Pipe, etc. competitions... even though I don't even venture into the park, I like to marvel at what these guys (many of them kids really) can do.

Not due to being sexist, the women's competitions just are not worth investing the time to watch. There's 1 or 2 competitors that are pretty good and the rest are just doing 360's and maybe a 540. Mind you I will readily admit that all of these women are far better on jumps, rails, etc. than I am, so I'm not trying to say they suck, just calling it like it is.

I've definitely been riding a lot less this season than I have in the past 5. Headed up to Beaver Creek for 4 days, then heading down to Telluride for 4 days coming up. That should pad my totals a bit. BC obviously isn't my first choice, but my friend has a bunch of Marriott points she wants to burn, and the Ritz Carlton has a resident St. Bernard that I like to hang out and drink beers with.

Definitely rode a lot less overall this season, but that's largely because I didn't ride at all until January. There just wasn't any snow and I had other things I could be doing. Now that the snow machine is back on, I'm riding about the same amount as usual, generally two days per week.

I'm not gonna lose my mind over a couple of warm days, especially with another storm right on the horizon.

But, what we really need is some snow in the foothills. So far it's been a super dry, super windy winter in the foothills. Nothing is getting over the divide. This whole place is a tinderbox with this combo of dry weather and near constant wind. We need a good upslope storm.

So, in certain spots, this warm weather has lead to the formation of a hard crust in the snowpack. new snow will not bond well to it.

edit (from CAIC):

Very warm temperatures will create dangerous avalanche conditions at lower elevations on Friday. Without a solid freeze last night, the surface snow will quickly grow unstable this morning as the sun rises

Welp, I think this weekend was enough to get me to rage quit weekend riding for the rest of the season. Left my house in Lakewood at 5:45AM on Saturday. Didn't make it to Idaho Springs until 7:30AM, got to Keystone around 8:45AM. Blue skies and I-70 was completely dry. Absolutely no reason for that kind of shit show with perfect driving conditions.

Snowboarding is fun and all, but I think knitting is more my speed now. If anyone needs me I'll be over at the KnittingForum.com, hanging out in the Colorado Yarn, Meet Ups, and General Discussion thread.
