sorry i've been pretty inactive my season almost didnt happen, but I did have a blast on the NS Insta/Gator at steamboat in march and I've got an twinned up version of it here gonna try to jump on the backside a this storm (got to ride it in some soft spring conditions already).
I put the boards away while cleaning out the garage a few weeks ago and got into mountain-bike mode. But may try to do a bigger line on Sunday. I hate Mt biking in wet muddy cold conditions, and May can be great to do the bigger lines, so we will see.......
Yep, gonna have to hit up the Basin tomorrow. The last day at Loveland just was not sufficient to end the season on.
Mountain biking season just got hit with a major delay. It's gonna be a mud-fest for awhile now. Lots of moisture in the forecast, but that's just fine by me. Man, it was a warm, dry winter. We needed this late spring blast.
Looking like a real powder day for tomorrow. I already told the boss I am sick. One last powder day at Bert and I just picked up my new Never Summer Swift split. I got to demo one at Silverton Splitfest and it was a super fun board in soft corn. I didn't think I would get to take it out in powder until next season. Color me wrong...
Places like Buff Creek and Stauton should be good to go for mountain biking after a warm day or two. The terrain is sandy, grainy type of stuff so it drains quickly. Not a lot of mud.
Well it was fun early, then Denver showed up and ruined it. Snows super heavy and the Basin has roped a lot of terrain off. Rumor is Pali might re-open tomorrow. 1 more day and my season is officially over.
Well we have legit snow falling right now. Pretty sure Loveland and A-Basin are going to be announcing their opening dates soon. I know there are peeps here who will probably try to go find turns on some of the passes and other go to early season spots. Just be aware of the conditions. It will still be thin, but there is also a enough snow already to slide. Storm and wind slab is no joke. You probably won't be completely buried, but being raked over rocks or into trees can still kill you if you go for a ride. It's early season, I would stick to spots that are more or less grassy underneath and not very steep with open run outs. Think of consequence if the worst happens. There is a whole lot of season to come, so take it easy. That said, I am looking forward to scratching that itch. Have fun!
I've come out of Summer hibernation to post things vaguely related to Colorado Conditions, Meet ups, and General Talk (but mostly just complain about traffic).
So generally speaking, how quick can a big storm sweep in under the radar? Because as of now, Colorado is not expected to have a good storm until at least January. Just a few inches of snow here or there is show on Accuweather for the month of December and rest of November. Are these accurate or can a storm pop up next week and dump a foot of snow without the weather forecasters predicting it?
Winter storm systems in Colorado are directly tied to linvillegorge being out of town. The only way to accurately predict when we'll get snow is to check his schedule. Since most weather forecasters don't follow the "linvillegorge Out of Town" model, their forecasts are highly inaccurate.
It looks like we might get close to a foot of snow this Friday. Last week this wasn't in the forecast, so things can change pretty quickly. I don't think I would trust any forecast more than a week or two out.
How are the lift lines looking at Breck and Keystone? Assholes turned off their webcams. Epicmix consistently says 0 minute wait which has to be bullshit. I can tell A-Basin is a shitshow per usual.
Loveland was the worst junk show I've ever seen it this morning. Peak season crowds to try to ride two runs. One run and done. Fuck that noise. I-70 wasn't far off from peak season bullshit too.
No more weekend riding for me until A LOT more snow and rope drops.
The latest statistic I heard is that 300 people are moving to the Denver area each day....
Not sure how accurate that is. But the weekday traffic on I-70 seems worse now than weekend traffic was back in the 90's.
I was pretty much set on moving to Boise, Idaho until I got into the planning phase and discovered there aren't any jobs in my field. My only other real option is Salt Lake City, so in Denver I stay .
I think the Christy Sports demo day had a lot to do with it.
I was gonna sign up until they told me it cost $50. Fuck that. Why am I going to pay Christ Sports $50 to demo equipment that's being provided by the manufacturers? Short answer, I'm not.
Moving to Ridgway in January. Close on my house in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to be done with the I70 shit show. Red Mountain Pass will be my new backcountry spot, with the summit being about 40 minutes away. Telluride is only 40 minutes away too.
In the meantime, Cameron Pass above Fort Collins has been money as of late. Near mid winter conditions up there right now. Bagged South and North Diamond peaks yesterday. The riding in the trees is solid until you get to the bottom 200 vertical in that area. A good 10" storm should solve that problem. When that happens the alpine is most likely going to be off limits at that time. The snow pack structure is scary weak up high on north facing slopes. Looks like one of those years.
I'm jealous. I can't do this Front Range shit show much longer. At this point, I just hope the boom keeps on going and I can sell my house for enough in 3-4 years to bounce and buy a place for cash with the profits. Mortgage free living under the age of 40 would be some pretty awesome financial freedom.
I hope this pattern change being hinted at comes to fruition. I have four use them or lose them floating holidays to use by the end of the year and a few sick days to boot. I would like nothing more than to use all of those on powder days.
