So true. I have friend who moved from Phoenix to Utah. The poor guy was wearing his jacket indoors when the temps got to around 50. Even better, he didnt understand why cars had antifreeze in them. Im worried he wont make it through the winter. Its been teens or lower pretty much the entire year here so far.
Im the biggest weather baby. I grew up at the beach so I don't like hot OR cold. I like it to be about 75, sunny with a slight breeze. Anything below 60 is too cold or above 80 is too hot
I can suck it up for snowboarding and if given the choice would take cold over hot. Where I live now it stays over 100 for weeks at a time during the summer and just don't go outside during the day. At least here it cools off at night unlike in AZ, it NEVER cools down!!
I spent a good 7 months working near Harlingen, TX.
The heat and humidity was just unrelenting, It was f**king awful. I could work outside and be fine but It pissed me off that I couldn't just enjoy being alive outside. Playing golf was terrible there, I only did it because I was stubborn and wanted to play golf. I couldn't just sit on the deck and enjoy the day, it was miserable.
I'll be surprised if I choose to retire in a warm state.
After last year's dismal 2 month season, I opted NOT to buy a season pass for the first time in years. Last year's season can pretty much be summarized by one word, "mud". I'd wake up early on Saturday morning, check the on-line cams, and say, "Uh-uh, no way. Not worth the drive or trashing my gear." I lost my shirt on my season pass. I figure we are in for a short warm trend (at least), and this year has been no different. The mountain didn't open until after Christmas again this year, with 2 runs and 45 min lift lines. No thanks...even though I took off for a week's vacation.
I went kayaking on New Year's Day instead, and decided that I'd commit to more winter hunting outings instead of snowboarding. This past weekend, we took a family trip to the beach. Chilly, but it beat paying cash to ride in the mud and rain. I wish one of two things...that either we return to normal, cold winters, or we just warm up to tropical temps so I can rid myself of snowboarding torment... In 20+ years of snowboarding, these last two have been the worst that I can remember. I've been dying to order a new, custom board but just can't justify it now. My oldest has outgrown his snowboard gear. I'm not gettting him anything new this year either. I'm thinking I'd get more use out of a custom smoothbore or kayak at the moment. :dunno: My kiddo's have other interests as well. Unless I time a snow dump with another trip out west, this winter will be the winter that wasn't.
Nothing like a nice negative 26 at the condo when you wake up. Looks like the typical January freeze is about to break. But the lack of snow has me thinking I do need to shave my head again. Trying to be optimistic.
Can we start the "we'll get ours come March and April" line of thinking again? That's what we were all thinking/hoping about this time last year. Soon after that thought process comes the "next season can't possibly be this bad again" manner of coping.
I've actually never been to Vail during the winter but the Village is definitely a trip. It seems like around every corner might be some weird anamatronic mannequin or an elf handing out hot chocolate.
Not gonna lie if the jobs opened up for both the wife and I, I'd move tomorrow.
Blue sky basin alone is worth the trip. Snowklinger how long have you lived here and not gone? Its really not as bad as you guys are making it out to be...at all actually. Now if it was a holiday weekend ya I may stay away but at the same point its 5000+ acres...pretty hard to not find somewhere empty at any given point. Only downside are the long catwalks but the runs they get you too are worth it.
There have been about 4 days this year with lines that were obnoxious. I'm sure there will be a few more days in march that are crazy... Even on the worst days you can get away to another side of the mountain where no one is at. If you ride until closing during the holidays, the final run down is nuts at 330-430... If your on the mountain late just have a beer up top and wait until 430 to ride down right before final sweep......
I'm coming in Saturday for a week for our annual family trip to Beaver Creek. I've been following the weather so I know the season has been underwhelming so far but how are the actual conditions at BC and Vail right now? Lots of rocks, bare spots, icy, etc. Should I go ahead and mentally prepare myself for multiple gashes to my board, lol. I wish we could postpone the trip but its a yearly thing tied to this week plus its free lodging. Any day on the mountain beats a day at work.
Guys, I know what the forecasters are saying, but don't get your hopes up. It seems like southern San Juan dumpage almost always equals disappointment for the I-70 areas. Seems like the forecasters always predict huge snow for the southern San Juans and decent snow elsewhere and it sets us up for rampant butthurt when we get up early to see snow reports of 2" at the I-70 spots. I'm not buying it this time. If it comes, GREAT but I don't expect it.
Ill be in keystone tomorrow if anyone is there lmk, probably gonna go up a little later than normal.. Go up like 11 or 12 or so and ride the afternoon/evening at keystone
Flying out to Breck on Friday for the next 3 weeks. If you see two middle aged women with bad attitudes riding trees, moguls or park say hi. Or run the other way.
Dowds junction was closed too so that kept the crowds away for a little bit this morning....
