Default Utah Bound in March/April

Hey all,

Headed to Utah for 10-12 days around Easter. Actually I'm taking the 22nd off and I won't go back to work until the 8th, but I'm driving. I figure 2-3 days of driving each way depending on weather.

Although I'm from Utah, this is my first year riding. I won't be riding more than 3 or 4 days while there (be lucky if I get that many in as the wife doesn't ride) cuz I have family and friends to see and all that shit.

That said, where is the best place to ride that time of year? I have a buddy that loves Brighton. Plan to ride with him a couple of days. Oh and I don't care about park at all so that's a non-issue. I don't care about amenities and all that shit either. I won't be staying nearby so that doesn't matter. All I care about is snow, terrain, crowds, and price. Looking for lots of snow and vertical, minimal crowds, and a good price. I will probably only get to ride during the week.

Thoughts?

Oh and although I'm a total n00b, I plan to have about 30 days in before I get there.

Thanks,

OD

Easily some of the best time to ride in Utah - the month of March.

Awesome snowpack, tons of storms (usually) and no crowds.

What kind of riding do you like to do?

Brighton is my favorite - NO crowds, powder last for days, great backcountry/sidecountry access, extremely cheap, the best parking lot setup in the world. Great for medium long pow runs, cliffs, tree runs, chutes.

Snowbird is the most crowded, but still not an issue compared to the rest of the US.

Snowbird has the steepest, most vertical runs. Powder doesn't last long. Tram is awesome. Really awesome terrain, takes a few days to find everything. Go during the week only. Steep long runs. Just so much fun, it's Utahs only BIG mountain resort in my opinion. It's pricey though. Gets the most snow, barely more than brighton. Snowbird is just fucking fun.

Solitude is probably my third. Mainly for honeycomb canyon - it's basically inbounds backcountry. AMAZING lines back there. It's the least crowded resort i'd say. The front face is ok, if you stay to the left (of trail map) there are some really gnarly lines, pretty epic stuff. A day or two there is enough though.

I would also try to hit Powder Mountain and Snowbasin once or twice if you can, they're north of salt lake. About an hour from downtown. Pow Mow is supposed to be killer, SnowBasin has some epic terrain as well. They don't average as much snow as Brighton/Sbird/Soli though.

I would stick to the Cottonwood Canyons personally. If you're doing 10 days - I'd hit Snowbird twice, Brighton twice, Solitude once, Snowbird again, Brighton two more then finish off at snowbird. Maybe hit Park City or the Canyons just for the experience. Although they are flat, get barely any snow, SO SO SO pricey, warmer, you know what - nevermind

Thanks for the reply!

As I'll have limited time to ride (not the primary purpose of the visit) I will probably only hit Brighton and maybe Snowbird and Powder Mountain (cheap snow cat runs look awesome).

Thanks again!

Another Brighton rider here. If you are planning on primarily hanging with your buddy I don't think you'll be disappointed with Brighton. If you want to venture out I'd say check out Snowbird/Alta since it's just a canyon over and just so you can say you did. I've never thought much of the Park City resorts, and I've never been to Pow Mow or Basin so can't talk about them.
