If we ever get any snow... I'm taking Avy 1 in early february with my wife and another chick (single!). This is my 16th season on a snowboard, most of that time has been in the midwest although I'm comfortable on anything in summit county. Just finished splitting my old Burton. Anyone with experience care to take on a newbie? I will have all the necessities by the time of my class.

Well if we get snow, we should get out. Been splitting for 12 years in and around Colorado. Wildsnow riding is different but if you can ride the double blacks and are comfortable in tight trees it shouldn't be much of an adjustment.

Everything out here is about what the conditions are giving you. Generally speaking we are tree rats most of the winter, getting into alpine terrain starting maybe late March and onward. All depends on the snow, weather, underlying layers and such. Bert is my main stomping grounds and for good reason. There are several other passes and peaks I have plenty of experience with too.

If you haven't already, pick up and read Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper. Great thing to have read before you take a Level I. Friends of Berthoud Pass also has several free Avalanche Awareness Classes scheduled around the Metro area. They are great intro's and primer's for those going to take a Level I. They are also great refreshers for us vets too. Especially after the Summer lay off.

The next two classes are December 11th at the Go Lite Store in Boulder and December 17th at the Oriental Theater in Denver. Classes run about two hours and cover the basics that a Level I will expand upon. Start time is 7pm.

Cool I've got a buddy in town the 11th to ride I'll see if he wants to check it out, if not I'll try to hit the 17th if I can get off work early. I did a couple of the awareness classes last year (REI), definitely a good idea before the class. Just ordered the book, thanks.

hah, she's looking... and aggressive! Bad ass snowboard (border cross racer) she's no model but she's attractive. I think she's too aggressive for a lot of the guys she meets, she got shot down hard on the chairlift on sunday at copper, quite funny!

Yeah don't get me wrong, every time I drive to the resorts I'm looking at lines all over the place and dreaming. I guess what I'm saying is I want to get better so I can fully appreciate it. And I'm more than a little chicken about avalanches.

I realize that I can be educated on them, but I'm not sure how extreme I want to take my extreme sport? :dunno:

After 21 years of resort riding I still find great stuff to hit in bounds! :D

When the lifts are running at the resorts out west, I take advantage of them and I am in agreement with you that there is never going to be a shortage of incredible terrain at resorts out here...(see, as long as we avoid politics, we do agree on many things....:D). I don't ever see a day where I will only do backcountry, I like to shred too much to limit myself that much.
Yeah I just won't debate American politics with you anymore! (arguably I know very little about them anyway) but we can debate Canadian politics anytime! lol

There is something great about running 80+ km on the snow in bounds. It's a great workout!

I see myself in the future running a few backcountry lines a year, when conditions are safe and I've scouted the area. Other than that I do enjoy everything we've got to experince as far as in bounds terrain goes! :yahoo:
