Monarch Mountain 1/28-30

What an awesome lil mountain. For only 800 acres the runs seem to just go everywhere and aside from runouts from where you hiked(we hiked the shit out of it!), the fucker is steep too! I love the smaller mountain vibe too, just so friendly and mellow. On tuesday the entire state got the pow memo and it was pretty crowded, but there was just so much fucking snow! It was snowing before we got there and the day we left, and we got over 2' for the 3 days!

Just a couple crappy phone pics of snowporn.

Actually on top of a cornice here even though it looks flat.

Thanks for posting this! I'm pretty psyched to head down in March. Assuming you spent most of your time in Mirkwood basin?

I went there last season. I agree! It's cool! It was one of my best days. Plus on the drive there I saw more wildlife than I have all year in Summit. I saw 3 elk herds and mule deer were in Salida.

FYI, you can get a buy one get one free coupon from shells stations when you get 10 gallons of gas for Monarch Mountain.

No. It is a 30 minute hike for less vertical. We did hike up there and it was cool, but there was tons of fresh everywhere and shorter hikes up ridges and stuff.

It's worth doing but I wouldn't lap those hikes. Its a fairly short bowl to the catwalk runout.

Nice. I was in Crested Butte the same time, and we got about 2' of snow those days as well. The first day was about 9" of heavy, wet snow that was not a ton of fun, but the next day brought another 6" of light fluffy pow and it was one of the best days ever. So much snow and no lift lines

What are lift lines?

Btw as Dreampow has said, the Proto was insane in pow. Was riding a 154 center reference stance 180 lbs floating in waist deep plus no problems. SOOOOooo fun.
