Default Upcoming Utah Trip 2/28 - 3/4

Hey peeps, so we've got a bro trip coming up in a couple weeks. Already got plane tix, hotel in Midvale, and rental SUV locked down. I've done some research and read some threads, but now we're just trying to finalize the details, not to mention praying for some of that legendary champagne pow. *For anyone else reading, picking up discounted daily lift tix at a local shop is actually cheaper than the SuperPass.

1.} 3 days to ride 3 different mountains. Big Cottonwood seems to be where it's at, so we're hitting Snowbird (possibly Fri 3/1 to avoid the weekend crowds) and Brighton for sure. Having a tough time deciding b/w Solitude or Snowbasin for the 3rd day. Thoughts?

2.) Would love to do some cat boarding at PowMow, but really not sure how to work that in without losing out on a full day or riding somewhere else. Would 2-3 cat runs there be worth sacrificing a full day at another resort?

Thanks in advance!

I've never been to Snowbasin, but the Honeycomb Canyon lift at Solitude is pure awesome, so that'd be my choice.

Your plan sounds great - but I am really sorry to say you might be in the non-storm window - The Wasatch has been getting dumped this week, this weekend should seen an additional 10-20" but then it looks dry till the end of the month.

Though it is definitely too far out to tell right now.

Check Wasatch Snow Forecast.com | Your Wasatch Powder Resource for detailed forecasts and updates on weather regarding the Cottonwoods.

How far out do these weather forecasts get good? I'll be there the 10th to 16th. I'm hoping for some powder..somewhere. I've got Snowbasin, Brighton, and The Canyons locked with another 2-3 days anywhere.

There is thoughts of the storm window opening up again during the second week of March.

March is usually killer in Utah, but there is no way to tell unless it's within ~10 days, even then...

Not much else we can do but keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Sucks since we all have such busy schedules, this trip was conceived several months ago and finalized about a month ago. I def miss the days of being able to chase pow long distance...

So what do you guys think about PowMow cat runs: Should we skip a day of resort riding to do that? Or is there any any alternative where we could somehow work that in without sacrificing a day elsewhere?

I'd do cat runs before I did Snowbasin, unless Ogden gets some snow while you're in town.

To be totally honest I wouldn't make any plans about anything till the day before -

I would wait to see if there is still fresh snow left over in powmow's cat section when you get here - they got hammered with 18"+ just today, with more on the way tonight and tuesday so there may be some left for ya. I would call and ask about conditions.

And why skip an entire resort day - you can just do a few cat runs in the morning, then spend the rest of the day at powder mountain. Or you can do the cat in the AM and drive over to snowbasin which is a killer resort and it's literally right next to Powder Mountain.

If you had to pick right now -

Powder Mountain
Snowbasin
Snowbird

Brighton is my favorite mountain, but it's a bit underwhelming compared to the bird and snowbasin - you really got to know where to go, it's small, none of the ski resort feel. On a powder day though it's epic, no crowds, amazing backcountry access, it's just a giant playground full of cliffs, tress, chutes, bowls and has an awesome park if you're into that- it's got something for every rider. But for the record I have never been to Powder Mountain - it's supposedly similar to brighton, mom n pop type feel. I hope this doesn't confuse you more. Check out all the trail maps, see what looks the best to you. Brighton will be super close to your hotel though, plus they have good night riding.

edit: Brighton is better than solitude unless it's a big pow day - HoneyComb Canyon is basically in-bounds backcountry , great terrain, best reason for hitting solitude. Solitude doesn't have a lot of different terrain, there is a couple lifts I only hit - summit and powderhorn
