So my buddy and I just signed up for this...

Lake Louise Events & Activities

It's basically a freeride competition down some steep rocky terrain. And the best line (including some drops, tricks, etc.) wins. You can win money but I'll be thrilled if we even make it through the qualifiers. I'm pretty sure this is the first year snowboards have been allowed to enter, so the field could be interesting!

Here's some vids from previous years:

Jesus... so to win you just have to survive bouncing off the rocks? Those guys looked incompetant and should not have been riding that lol. If you watch later the guys that are good don't go anywhere near those rock beds. Second vid looked a lot more "in control" haha.

Yeah I was expecting massive tricks, and apart from a few flips and grabs, I saw basically nothing. I'm hoping that if you pick a clean line, and do a couple grabs, maybe a little 180 or 360 that should be good enough to at least make it through to day two.

Here's hoping I'm less incompetent than the guys in the vid!!! :yahoo:

Hotel room is booked for thurs and friday nights, so if anyone feels like competing or watching, I'll be there!

How's it been? :hope:

Where's the vid?

Well it was okay, I didn't come in last place!!! :yahoo:

Unfortunately it was on a different slope than I expected, so all the training we'd done in the last couple weeks on a slope called ER3 was useless. Add to that really flat light and neither of us made the cut for day two.

I can't remember the last time I felt that much adrenaline pumping through me though! By the time I got to the bottom I was so out of breath I can't believe I made it in one run!

I'd like to say I'll try again next year, and this time get more practice in, but it was sort of poorly run (the 8:00 start meeting didn't happen until about 8:45, and the 4:00 results meeting didn't happen until 5:00). I'll wait until next year to decide to compete.

In other news, it was only ONE RUN to prove your skill, so I decided to ride the Virus. Big mistake. I blew out one of the edges landing on a rock... I'm going to try to fix it but I may have fucked the board!:eek:hmy:

Thanks yeah I may bring it to them. Took the T7 to Ski Cellar but they didn't do a great repair on a rock gouge...

I'll post pics of the damage soon. Right between the bindings on my heel edge, there's a piece about 6" long x 1" deep that has slightly bent up. It's bent enough to actually crack the base material lengthwise about 1" in from the edge. I fear that that entire section is now significantly weaker.

Was debating about heating it up and clamping it between two 2x4s, but I think unless I'm melting resin and base material I'll just be weakening it even more.

Chances are if I just use it as a groomer bomber it'll last many years like this, but it's SOOOOOOOOOOO good in the powder!

I was even thinking of cutting off several layers of FG/CF and then bending the area down, and patching it with new FG, but that'll be pretty hack. :dizzy:

Last option is sending it back to Germany to see what magic he can work on it, but I think I've well and truly fucked this one! Still want me to try that kessler?!? :giggle:

Lol as long as we stay away from the retarded section front side from top of the world. I think I spent a entire ptex strip there X_X
Yeah I've had bad luck all over LL. It's the only hill that chews through boards for me! I usually go under the lift on Top of the World, then cut around to the old lift line. Not bad in there. The worst stuff I get is all over the back side. Paradise bowl stuff, sometimes the ultimate steeps but usually there's tons of snow in there.

I hate to say this but I almost need to dedicate a board to LL and keep whatever I replace the Virus with for every other hill (probably another Virus). On the other hand, I could just stick to easier terrain! :icon_scratch: Ha!

Here's what happened :dizzy: Lake Louise Events & Activities

At least I didn't score 0, and there were other guys in the ski category that scored lower than me so I must have done SOMETHING right?!? lol

Aww man! I missed this!?
Now I cant wait for next season!
Have you done one of these before? It was a VERY humbling experience to say the least. The light was flat, windy as fuck standing at the top. Heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest standing there waiting for the "3...2...1... dropping"

I felt like my run was better than my score, but I think the judges know what they're looking for more than me. I completed 4 airs and bailed on one of them. Did good turns in between the jumps, and took what I thought was a good line down the slope. Unfortunately whatever I did didn't translate into a good score.

Some boarders outright stopped in the middle of their runs to line up a jump, and they scored significantly higher than me (despite the fact we were told stopping will kill your score).

So as an event it was fun, if a little poorly run (can't stand waiting 45 mins for an 8:00 am meeting to start). On the other hand I could have spent the day riding the rest of louises gnarly terrain with my buddy from work. At this point I'm not sure if I'll enter again next year. At least now we know it's only ONE RUN, and I know which slope is the day one slope, so I can get a chance to practise.

If I compete again next year my goal is to make the cut. The best riders were pulling 20 foot airs with the occasional 360 thrown in. So I've got work to do before making it higher up the ladder. All I want is sponsorship from Virus or Kessler so I can get some free boards!!! lol :yahoo:

I would love to take part in both actually.
Problem is... I live in the middle of the Canadian prairies. Costs like $300 in fuel just to get somewhere to ride.. plus lift tickets, accommodations, beer, and whatever is left on food.
Snowboarding is an expensive activity where I live.. unless you enjoy sliding around on 100 meter valleys.
You ears pop at the top of the mtn... our ears pop at the bottom of the valley.

on competition day I had to go first BECAUSE of my damn name! Lol thanks for the props anyway. :) I think I've realized I just like riding. F the stupid competition! I'm heading to louise this sunday to ride the larch drops I like and work on the cliffs skills!

Yeah there are a LOT of "cliffs" at louise that have great landings. Totally clean and a lot of them are in fresh too, so landings are like pillows!

Too bad you can't make your way down for Sunday, I know it's a long drive, but we don't have THAT much winter left!
