Anybody been there? We are planning a trip up there over the long MLK weekend. Not sure if we are going to stay in a yurt at the place or get a hotel in Houghton, any recommendations or closer reasonably priced hotels? I see it's pretty primitive as far as the accommodations, do people usually hit a grocery store and pack a cooler or is there Subways nearby, etc. Any advise for things to bring or be aware of would be appreciated.

Seems as tho BoHo is on most of the MI SBF members list of "Want to Go" but can't recall if any of us actually have. So, I've been up there in the fall for photography but I've ever been up that way in winter. Roads in the UP are mostly winding two lane blacktop. And that region can get up to 10-12 ft. of snow in a season, so be prepared. (...you'll need the 4x4!)

....if you do go, post it up in the MI regional forum! We all want to hear from someone with first hand experience with the place! ;)

I've been there multiple times. Love it. I have done more 'extreme' skiing there than anywhere out west. Mostly because I'm too lazy to find the spots out west and don't really want to break any rules.

Last I was there was about 8 years ago? I stayed in town at a dumpy motel.

I haven't been and have mostly read good things, (I had put it on my bucket list), however did read a few posts from folks who say that it can get mobbed with families with little kids, parts of it aren't as extreme and it can get a bit tracked out because it does get a bit busy. No personal experience, I can't find the thread that I read, it might not have been on this board.

Are you sure they were talking about the same Boho, because it's like 99 percent black and double blacks. Not exactly a kid/family friendly place at all. I don't even think they groom the few non-glade runs that they have. But I don't know for sure because I also have never been there personally.

Yeah clear roads. Ive never had too much trouble driving over there with my fwd car. You won't have any problems with a 4x4 unless you get in a really bad storm.

I've never stayed in the yurts because I have friends an family in houghton. But I wouldn't be opposed to it if. We stayed in a ski in back country yurt when we went to ride in the porkies a couple years ago and it was a blast.

I made it up there last season for the first time. There's no place like it, the vibe there is like none other that I've ever experienced. If you get a yurt you get breakfast and dinner(I think). My girlfriend and I stayed in a cabin and they fed us both meals. Bring some snack type stuff, but nothing else should be needed except for beer. We were there during the week and never waited for a lift line even with only 1 lift running. Tons of fresh lines to be had even a couple days after the storm. Ditching my western trip to just explore bohemia this year...it's a 7-8 hour drive for me to get there, but well worth the seat time.

One other thing would be to bring an old board or at the least expect to hit some rock and wood. P-tex would be a good thing to have on hand. When is MLK weekend? Early in the season there is going to be plenty of crap to chew your base. The recent storms are definitely helping up there though and hopefully that trend will continue.

Bohemia website says they have had over 3 feet of snow in the past week, should be good conditions by mid January! :yahoo:

Lvs4pow thanks for the info. MLK weekend is Jan 17 to 21. Do you recall how much it was for a cabin? The website said something about quad occupancy pricing so I wasn't sure, guess I should call them. I'll pick up some ptex before we go. My Ride is pretty beat up from hitting a lot of rocks over the years so I'm not too worried about it. Got one guy going with me for sure and 2 more who will not commit so I'm not sure if we are going to stay there or in a nearby hotel, trying to keep costs down.

Sorry I'm so slow to reply, not on here much. Yeah the price listed is what you will pay. For super cheap lodging get in the hostile, you will meet a bunch of people and it's like 20$ a night. They've had 5' in the last week! One helluva start to their season up there. My girlfriend and I picked up the cheap season passes and I'm super stoked to get back up there.

Yeah checked the online availability and they had 2 of the slope side cabins for $156/night and they had the hostile for $25/night. We haven't decided to do the hostile or stay in Houghton and drive in. Have you done the hostel thing? Looks awesome, they have been getting dumped on the last couple of weeks. When are you heading up?

#21 ·
no I haven't done the hostile but plan on it this winter. My girlfriend and I stayed in a cabin just to have some privacy...but we met all of the folks in the hostile and they were a great crew while we were there.

Fingers crossed here that the lake effect continues up there, and if it does you will be ruined for the rest of the season after you experience bohemia :)

Heading up to Bohemia next Friday, anybody been there this year? Looks like they been getting dumped on so far, 190" this year already.

#23 ·
Holy shit! They might cross the 400 mark this year if superior doesn't freeze too much. I think I'm going in mid to late feb. Dont want to waste a season like this, conditions are pretty damn good here right now and we've only had like 45". Let us know how it goes.

Will do this will be first time up there, really looking forward to it after watching utube videos of the place and the amount of snow they have already. Supposedly they have had more snow then any lift accessed mountain in the US this year.

Just got back from a 4 day trip up there. It snowed every day, basically all day...totals were nothing too impressive but we woke up to maybe 5" on the last day that had been windblown into places making it feel balls deep. The coverage is good and if they stay on this weather pattern there gonna have one helluva season up there. Here's a little stoke for any thinking about making the trip to the far north.

Cool I'll check out the video tonight, can't view utube at work. How were the road conditions? We didn't make reservations in time so we have to stay Houghton and drive in. With all the snow I would assume that most of the rocks and stuff are covered up pretty well? We are heading up next Friday and riding through the weekend and possibly Monday too, can't wait.:yahoo:

The roads were good, snow covered but cold enough that they were grippy. Check out copper harbor for a motel, they have a place there with rooms for like 50$. It would be closer to Bohemia for you and it's a beautiful little town right on the lake. Coverage is damn good, we hit a few rocks but for the most part everything is good. You're gonna love it man, have a good trip up there!

Got back from Mt. Bohemia yesterday and man what a cool place. The conditions were awesome with powder everywhere and fresh stuff to be found all over the woods. We woke up to a little over 6" of fresh snow on Sunday that made the place even better. The terrain at this place is extreme with woods riding everywhere, rock drops, deep snow, and ungroomed runs. Two of the guys that went struggled with the lack of grooming. We had a blast and my legs are still burning today. I hope to go back next year as we didn't get to hit everything. No injuries and boards made it out in good shape, we hit very little in the woods except an occasional branch or two on the ground and no rock shots.

Your going to have a blast. Really the only lift lines I waited in were at the first lift on the first run because they were having some kind of issue with the lift and then the first ride up the second lift because it opened about 45 minutes after the first lift for some reason. Other than the lift lines were very small.

I was up there on Saturday (1st time) and can also offer a review. 99% of my riding has been done in the WA state area (Snoqualmie/Alpental, Crystal, Stevens, Baker) just for some perspective.

My mind was blown by this place. It greatly exceeded my expectations as the only other places I've been in the Midwest are Alpine Valley and Wilmot. It is a real mountain with an amazing base and an awesome assortment of trails and terrain. It is like a mini Mt. Baker. It isn't as huge as a Western mountain but the size is fun. After you get done with a run you don't feel like it ended too soon and it's nice since it allows you to change up the assortment of your runs frequently.

Nothing is groomed except for the base area which was great. I love moguls and was happy they could be found here. The place is filled with a ton of natural features for jumps and drops. The treed runs were INSANE!! I've never ridden such densely populated tree runs and they were full of fresh powder. You're forced to sharpen your carving ability and become a forest ninja. No two runs ever felt the same, there is just so many ways to switch it up here. You definitely experience the freedom of a resort out west.

The lines were not bad at all considering how good the conditions were. There were no beginner's that I noticed and no small kids at all.

The drive from Chicago is pretty long (7.5 hours) so its not something I see myself doing too often, but I'm definitely planning to try to hit it a few more times this Winter. The fact that its so remote probably works in its favor. If it was in Central WI the place would be way too crowded and get completely tracked out fast. The setting is beautiful.

I would highly recommend!

Much better review than mine and I agree 100% with it. The place is really cool and gives you that big mountain feel since the terrain is so similar.

Question I have is that is it really only for the most advanced riders? I understand that beginners would have no business there, but what about intermediate level riders? Obviously one wouldn't get the most bang for their buck until they were advanced tree slayers, but is there enough to keep an intermediate rider busy without kicking their ass too much? I mean, I like trees and unkept runs too but I am have a long ways to go to becoming a forest ninja.

I.E. worth the trip from the LP for it?

Some of the videos I've seen are extreme and make me think I'd never be able to handle that place, yet I've seen several videos that make me think I could do that.

Well there is no easy smooth runs anywhere being that they don't groom, all of the runs have moguls and uneven choppy snow that can be difficult with the steepness of the runs. 2 of the guys that went with us, 1 on skis and 1 on a board, struggled quite a bit and I would consider them intermediate when it comes to groomers. We stopped at Granites Peak on the way home and they liked it much better and were able to fly down the groomers there but they are not much on trees. I personally wouldn't go if I was not comfortable riding trees and steeps because that is pretty much the highlight of the place. I'm not an expert by any means but I would consider myself advanced as I have been snowboarding for over 20 years.
