David, Garrett, and I rode yesterday. I was first one up. Got there expecting icey conditions and crowds. Got onto an empty lift and stepped off to softish snow. Took a run on great snow conditions. Pleasantly surprised that there was very minimal ice and those patches were reserved for the sides where the sunlight didn't reach.
There were two main runs open. One or the other was consistently empty. However, by 3:00pm, crowds started build. No biggie though as Dave and I called it quits around that time. Garrett had to skip out earlier than us. Needless to say, I am totally ready for Crystal now. Oh, and I made sure not to injure myself again haha. |

Pine Knob. No features. Actually had a few fun rollers. Even on that middle run there was this roller that was super fun to ollie off. Got to watch Dave wash out a ton because of the 152 he was on. Surprisingly though, he got some pretty high ollies off some of those rollers.

My girl and I went to Brighton on Saturday. We went late, squeezed it in after my brother's graduation. We got there around 5pm and were pleasantly surprised by the conditions. I expected ice too and while it was more hardpacked, I wouldn't call it ice. I've been on worse.
They had two runs open. The blue on the far right and the black right next to it. The rollers on the black were bombed out pretty bad as seen from the chair lift. It was enough to keep me from giving it a try. The crowds were pretty light. That surprised me some. I surprised myself with my riding. The first time felt weird but I made it down just fine. I chuckled at the memory of the last time I'd ridden this run when I was just starting out. A few runs in and I was right back where I left off last year and I even added a new 'trick' to my disgustingly short list. I can now to little 360 spins while riding down. Sounds ridiculous but to me that was a big deal. I credit this to my new board, that NS Legacy. Before I wouldn't have had the confidence to do the healside portion of that spin out of nerves of faceplanting but it's so easy NOT to faceplant on this board! There were a few times that I knew I should have taken a dive yet somehow I didn't. It was the weirdest feeling. It made me more confident in the board and more willing to try new stuff as the night wore on. I bit it a few times but it was cool because it was always when I was trying something different. I had a hard time discerning the "dampness" at speed that I keep hearing about. I bombed a few runs and I dunno..it didn't seem *that* much smoother than my old board but that could be because the last few days on my old board were on mushy snow and not ice and I just don't remember how choppy it was. I think I'd have to do one run with each board one run after the other to see the difference. We weren't out long. Maybe 3 hours. My girl was worn out by then and we decided to leave before she pushed it and got injured before this Friday.

Nice Leo, Glad the conditions were good! Wish I could have made it out, but I had a rough week and needed to catch up on a lot of stuff that I did not get done. Hope to ride with you soon. How were the ticket prices?

Alright guys, I really don't want to think negative, but this forecast for our weekend won't budge. The temps this week are in the high 30's with rain Wed and Thurs. This could very well destroy the snow coverage at Crystal.
We have to make a call. I know some of you got tickets already, but is rain-checking an option? Tough on me too as I set aside time for this in the schedule with the wife. If this weather doesn't budge, I only expect a few runs open at Crystal and definitely no trees. Let me know ASAP how everyone feels about the situation. Ron is calling Jeff about possible rain-check on our lodging. |
